This movie begins with a phenomenal if misleading shot. It shows a top hat and cane belonging to former dancing legend Tony Hunter being auctioned, with no takers. Of course, if you see a top hat and cane, you think “Fred Astaire.” But despite the implication and reference, Fred Astaire was, at the time this film was being made, still very much the greatest dancer in the movies (with apologies to Gene Kelly). Unlike Tony Hunter, he had never ceased to make “A” pictures. But no one could have played this role with more authority than Astaire.

The plot is simple: washed-out and used-up former dance legend Tony Hunter is returning to Broadway in an attempt to revive his sagging career. That provides the pretext that is needed for a nearly perfect musical. THE BAND WAGON is a magnificent blend of great songs, great music, great dancer numbers, great actors, and great comedy. The cast is perfect. You get not only the greatest song and dance man in movie history but also a magnificent partner in the elegant and leggy Cyd Charise. You get great comic relief with Oscar Levant and Nanette Fabray. And you get one of the few musical comedy performers who could rival Fred Astaire for elegance and charm in Jack Buchanan.

The musical numbers are both marvelous and apparently never ending. The film begins with Fred performing “By Myself” and then soon shifts to a thoroughly rousing version of “Shine on My Shoes.” Later in the film, two enormously debonair song and dance men (Fred and Jack) perform “I Guess I’ll Have to Change My Plan’s.” And that doesn’t even come close to exhausting the list.

Perhaps the highpoint of the film, however, comes when Tony and Gabrielle, the ballet performer the producers want to partner him with, uncertain that they will be able to dance with each other at all, take a carriage ride through Central Park to try to get to know each other. As they drive, they come upon an outdoor dance floor, with an orchestra playing the haunting Dietz and Schwartz classic “Dancing in the Dark” (which lyricist Dietz intended to be a meditation about the nature of human existence; Schwartz’s music matched the mood of the lyrics perfectly). Tony and Gabrielle get out and begin to walk together in rhythm, gradually and tentatively attempting a few dance steps. Eventually, they discover each other’s rhythm, and they begin to dance together marvelously and magnificently, matching the mood of the music precisely. It is one of the greatest moments in either Astaire or Charisse’s career.

This is a must see film for any fan of the movie musical. I have to confess that I am not, by and large, a big fan of the MGM musical. I prefer the kookiness of the older RKO musicals, or even the stylized musicals of Warners or even Fox. MGM musicals were, to me, too often overproduced and dominated by the art directors. This film, however, is a magnificent exception.

I’m not prepared to be objective about “The Band Wagon.” To me it has the artistry of “An American in Paris” and the rollicking fun of “Singing in the Rain.” Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse have never danced better before or since and this backstage musical with plenty of tunes by Dietz and Schwartz gives them plenty of opportunity to strut their stuff. To me the “Dancing in the Dark” sequence is the most sublime dance number ever recorded on film.

“The Band Wagon” is not just a musical, but a musical about musicals. Fred Astaire plays a slightly down-and-out version of himself, “Tony Hunter,” who was “in all those singing and dancing pictures ten or twelve years ago, but the critics say he’s washed up.” Against his better judgment Tony gets teamed up with Cyd in an arty version of “Faust” that has disaster written all over it. But you know show people . . . and musicals . . .

This movie really gets a split response. Nobody hates it but for some it’s “just okay” and then there are the ones like me who LOOVE it. It’s my favorite musical and one of my favorite movies, period. I’m very glad Amazon is stocking it again. If you’re a fan of Astaire, director Vincente Minnelli, or the MGM films of the early fifties, I doubt you’ll be disappointed if you take a chance on “The Band Wagon.”

I have to say that I was one of the lucky 1,000 people or so that saw “Three Barbecues” at their screening in Covington, KY - just across the river from Cincinnati. What a fun and witty movie.

The film was actually filmed in various parts of Cincinnati, OH and features among others, the famous chef Jean Robert de Cavel. This movie has it all - drama, suspense, romance, action, cameos from famous people and lots and lots of potato salad. But the best part of the movie has to be the music video/dream sequence including The Deviled Egg Nut and the foxy Candy Barklage. I can’t believe that MTV hasn’t picked it up yet…

If you like quirky films like Hair Spray, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka or even Blazing Saddles - this is a must have for your movie collection. I guarantee you’ll watch it a half dozen times!

Noises Off is a treasure of a movie buried in the comedy section of the video store. And after viewing it as a chance discovery, I would rank it as one of the funniest movies Ive ever seen bar none! There is no message, no lingering camera work and precious little plot actually, but the sight gags and interaction of the characters make this movie an absolute laugh riot.

The premise of this film deals with the rehearsals and pre-Broadway tour of a play that aspires to be a classic British sex farce. Michael Caine plays the beleaguered director, with Julie Hagerty as his stage manager, trying to corral a collection of stage and movie actors on both sides of the career loop. Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Christopher Reeve, Denholm Elliott, Marilu Henner and Nicolette Sheridan make up the onstage ensemble, with the able support of Mark Linn-Baker. Throughout early rehearsals and performances the cast conspires with and against each other in matters of romance, revenge and profession expression all to hilarious effect.

It all culminates in a fateful performance that we view/hear primarily from backstage as conflicts of love and stage presence boil over in mid-show. It just might be the funniest thing ever filmed that didnt involve the genius of Mel Brooks.

In 1992, Peter Bogdanovich directed a hilarious comedy called “Noises Off…”, which was based upon a play that was written by Michael Frayn. (Peter Bogdanovich also directed “What’s Up Doc” in 1972, “Paper Moon” in 1973 and “Mask” in 1985.) Starring a wonderful cast, “Noises Off…” is about a troop of actors preparing to perform a play on a national circuit that is under the direction of Lloyd Fellowes (Michael Caine) and features an actress named Dotty Otley (Carol Burnett). She includes a long-time friend, Selsdon Molbray (Denholm Elliott, 1922-1992), as part of her cast; but must contend with his alcoholism. Also included in her acting troop are Gary Lejeune (John Ritter, 1948-2003), Brooke Ashton (Nicolette Sheridan), Frederick ‘Freddy’ Dallas (Christopher Reeve), Belinda Blair (Marilu Henner), stage manager Poppy Taylor (Julie Hagerty) and prop manager Tim Allgood (Mark Linn-Baker), who must also be a stand-in actor if any of the other actors cannot perform. The play that they intend to perform takes place in a rural English country estate and opens with Dotty portraying a cantankerous housekeeper named Mrs. Clackett, who has a taste for sardines. Gary and Brooke enter next and portray an attorney named Roger Tramplemain and his assistant Vicki. They have come on behalf of the law firm representing the estate’s owners, Philip & Flavia Brent, who are portrayed by Freddy and Belinda and who are supposed to be out of town. Thrown into this mix is Selsdon’s character: a petty thief. Over the course of the play’s performances, various interactions between the actors, managers and Lloyd begin to have a negative impact upon the play’s execution with hilarious results.

Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine all performed their roles superbly in “Noises Off…”. The plot and character development are highly engaging and unpredictable. Memorable scenes include the dress rehearsal, the back-stage happenings, Seldon’s bottles, the sardines, the cactus, Lloyd’s relationships and the on-stage mishaps. Overall, I rate “Noises Off…” with 5 out of 5 stars for being a delightfully funny and engaging story. It’s a film that everyone can watch and enjoy and a fine way to remember John Ritter’s acting skills.

Sadly, Female Trouble would mark the final collaboration between John Waters and the fiendishly glamourous David Lochary.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Female Trouble! Click Here

John Waters is one of the few filmmakers who understands the mechanism by which high-profile criminals become popular icons in the public’s imagination. In Female Trouble this idea is investigated with the typically perverse Waters’ touch. Ultimately, the film is not particularly subversive when viewed within the construct of the sewer which is contemporary popular culture. Nevertheless, Waters illustrates the fine line that exists between glamour and crime. Criminals, as long as their trials last (and oftentimes beyond) are treated with a kind of scrutiny usually reserved for Hollywood elite and heads of State.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Female Trouble! Click Here

In Female Trouble, we are treated to the birth of absolute glamour. Dawn Davenport,as played with typical manic abandonment by Divine, is clearly a young woman of vision. She is trapped at school, thwarted at home, and utterly unable to satisfy her essential beauty needs. When things are at their bleakest, Dawn doesn’t cry. She takes action and takes to the road. Her fight for liberation from a world infected with glamour abortions–is the core theme of this film. Beauty at all costs. It is a glorious dream indeed.

Of course, something that sexy is bound to get picked up, right? In Dawn’s case, she gets picked up by Earl (boozing machinist, played magnificently by Divine (as Harris Glenn Milstead). Earl knows a hot body when he sees one, so he takes Dawn to an abandoned matress and proceeds to make sweet love to her. See, it is actually wondefully twisted becauses it is Divine screwing himself. The schitt stains on his drawers are a particularly delicious touch. Anyway, that foul meeting leads to a wicked little girl named Taffy. Taffy is pure, sinister fun. She doesn’t get to go to school, doesn’t have any friends, and is forced to socialize with an increasingly morose and critical Dawn. Oh, the sweet brutality that child suffers at the hands of her Mama. If you like child abuse, you’ll be gassed by Taffy’s plight. Especially when she is played by Waters regular, Mink Stole. Oh, what joy seeing a grown woman dressed like a profoundly deprived Shirley Temple on Meth.

Mary Vivian Pearce and David Lochary embody an ascetic, glacial glamour that is enhanced by their artic attire. As Donna and Donald Dasher, they are sexless, emotionless ciphers devoted completely to their credo that “crime is beauty”. Dawn, who’s devotion to pure glamour eventually supercedes even the Dashers, is the perfect vehicle for the Dasher’s philosophy. She is certainly eager to participate in the Dasher’s supreme vision. This vision culminates in a wild final sequence that is decidedly not particularly glamourous. I don’t quite know what the intent was of these final scenes, but they didn’t live up to the promise as personified by the Dashers.

Edith Massey once again shimmies her beautiful form into exceedingly revealing costumes. There is even a shot of her heaving rack. I’d take that over a thousand shots of Angelina Jolie. . Edie is subjected to all sorts of indignities as the colorful Aunt Ida. She’s verbally abused, mutilated, and confined like a Slave on a ship. Yet, she retains her girlish charm and it is impossible not to feel sympathetic towards her. That is basically the genius of Edith Massey. She even had me rooting for her as the completely sadistic Queen Carlotta in Desperate Living. I bet she made really strong drinks for her friends…

My all time favorite John Waters film. It is deliciuosly BAD, just the way I like it. Divine, Edith Massey,Mink Stole and ALL of the ‘Dreamlanders’ are cult legends. I love it more than Pink Flamingos, which is another trash masterpiece. THE BEST!

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R13CS6IG6RA47F I saw this during its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival - and was lucky enough to run into the director, Scott Sanders and the incredibly talented composer and editor Adrian Younge in line at another screening. This video combines moments from the trailer with bits from my conversation with the filmmakers - all captured on a handy Flip Mino Camcorder.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Black Dynamite! Click Here

Back in the day, films like Shaft, Foxy Brown and Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song styled funkalicious jazzy soundtracks, tough black heroes and heroines and corrupt white cops and politicians. A new genre was born, both celebrating and exploiting black culture, targeting urban African-American audiences with its style and subject matter. Some of the best of these films have become cult favorites, and have influenced new filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, whose Jackie Brown paid explicit homage to the genre he’d grown up on and loved. Shaft was recently remade in slick Hollywood style by John Singleton; but for the original low budget style and campy flair you had to go to the bargain bin dvd versions, until now.

Created by Scott Sanders and Michael Jai White, Black Dynamite tells the tale of a righteous brother, who’s got kung fu skills and knows just how to please the ladies. What he can’t do is what he promised his mother on her death bed: protect his brother from the drug lords that are destroying the inner city. Upon hearing that his brother was killed, he swears revenge and sets out on a quest to discover those responsible. It turns out this was no simple hit - his brother’s assassination was part of a vast conspiracy to disempower blacks by hitting them where it hurts the worst, and the conspiracy goes all the way to the top: President Richard Nixon himself, who, it turns out, has some sweet kung fu moves all his own.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Black Dynamite! Click Here

The film is hilarious, taking all of the absurd, campy, raunchy and cool elements of traditional 70’s blaxploitation films like Superfly and Dolemite, and tying them together into an absurdly funny epic revenge and save-the-world flick.

Part of the appeal is that the film mimics the on-the-fly imperfection of the old B-movie style Blaxploitation. Boom mikes occasionally appear in the shot, distracting the actor; obvious continuity problems (a woman whose tear of sadness appears and then disappears and reappears as the camera cuts back and forth between her and the big BD; an actor is suddenly replaced by a stand-in mid-scuffle, after he is obviously injured by a punch) add to the overall lightheartedness of the endeavor.

What impressed me, though, was that the film was not mocking blaxploitation, but rather paying homage. The filmmakers clearly know and love these films. Best of all, though, is Michael Jai White’s absolute immersion in character as a tough-as-nails crusader whose soft heart and shy demeanor only occasionally surfaces. I haven’t laughed out loud this much during a film in a very long time. Highly recommended, but not for the timid.

“Black Dynamite,” starring actor, martial artist, and former stuntman Michael Jai White, is a riproaring but affectionate sendup of “blaxploitation” films, action films with black stars that started with “Shaft” in 1971 starring Richard Roundtree, and grew to be the greatest burst of black participation in Hollywood history. Black actors, writers, and directors worked as never before, and created films that drew massive black audiences. These films created heroes out of private eyes, pimps, Vietnam veterans, drug dealers, hustlers, and black revolutionaries. These films were cheaply made, and were often derided by film critics and scholars, but black audiences saw a Hollywood fantasy spin put on character types they knew, frustration they had being voiced, and perhaps most importantly, black people fighting and beating the system.

The plot involves White as Black Dynamite, a neighborhood enforcer whose brother gets killed by a unsavory alliance between drug dealers and the mob. Black Dynamite begins a rampage of vengeance, beating up the bad guys, and loving and charming women as he goes. The movie uses both broad and subtle humor to point out the silliness inherent in these films, but it is all done with love and affection.

Black Dynamite is a very funny film that harkens back to another place and time - when there wasn’t huge blockbusters starring Will Smith and Jamie Foxx, and when the best entertainment in town was a film showing black people “sticking it to the man.”

They have so many of the other ones and they got this one for Christmas and keep watching it over and over. It’s fun and captivating for their age. It really holds their interest. Each of the Disney shows always teach life lessons also as this one does which is fantastic. We love this video!

When it comes to Englsih dubs of anime there are usually two categories, those that stink and those that really stink. Well surprisingly Nazca doesn’t fall into either category, I actually liked it, and I can’t remember the last time I liked a dub (well maybe Star Blazers when I was young). The English speaking cast was well chosen and their performances were quite believeable. I actually felt that the characters had some depth and dimension to them. As to the plot, it deals with reincarnation and the continuance of an unfufilled past from a previous life. The main characters discover they are the reincarnation of ancient Incas. Their discovery creates major turns in their lives. Friends and lovers now become enemies. While some may feel the story is not so original, I think their take on the story is quite good and well worth watching. While the visuals aren’t the most breathtaking, they are far from being as bad as some stuff I’ve seen in recent months from major anime distributors. My biggest pet peeve is the incorporation of certain C.G. graphics from time to time in certain scenes. I felt the C.G. was rather crude and resembled an old super nintendo video game. While it was a distraction it hardly appears and doesn’t really ruin the entire video. As for those who just can’t stand watching something dubbed into English, there is good news, the Japanese language version is also great to watch. It’s got some great voice talent (including Megumi Hayashibara, who I feel is one of the best Japanese anime voice actresses). The subtitles are very true to the original Japanese dialogue. Technically the DVD was well mastered, the sound was even better on the English version than the Japanese version. The menu screen is an improvement over Pioneer’s old style. I only wish they animated it and put some of that great music from the show in the background. In conclusion I will say this is a must have for any anime fan who appreciates a good story and nice animation. I hope the next volume is just as good.

This anime isn’t one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s your ordinary person in a fantastic role, forced to become a hero in a good vs. evil struggle. In Nazca, a group of Japanese citizens discover they were Incan warriors in a past life. Sound far-fetched? Their awakening souls start ruling their being, and friends become enemies. Will the good student be able to stop his now evil kendo teacher from unleashing the power of creation on the world?

The creators of this anime thought it would be a good idea to mesh computer generated scenes in with the animation. It wasn’t a good idea. The characters look out of place and distorted whenever the CG backgrounds are used.

Nazca is an all right story, but you can pretty much guess how it’s going to end. I don’t feel it’s worth purchasing 4 DVD’s to see the entire saga.

Why in the world producers want to film remakes of classics like “Alfie” (and recently “The Ladykillers”) is beyond me, because the remakes can only pale by comparison. It’s a fool’s errand. I haven’t seen the recent remake of “Alfie”, but I predict it will suffer by comparison to the original. Of course, the PR men will say that the film is not really meant to be an American copy of “Alfie”, but if not, why not name it “Wendell”?

The technique of having Alfie philosophize into the camera could have flopped, but Michael Caine pulls it off. Although his character is indeed a cad, he is also vulnerable and capable of feelings (The scene in which Vivien Merchant gets an abortion and Alfie is mortified). He is indeed self-centered, with his life being driven by how many “birds” he can bed, but Caine convinces us that Alfie is not a simple character.

And at the end when Ruby (Shelly Winters), who Alfie is considering “settling down” with, dumps him, having found sombody younger, his ego takes quite a bruising.

Finally, there is Malcolm. This is a child that Alfie had with one of his girlfriends, who, since Alfie is not the marrying kind, sensibly married someone else. Alfie secretly, wistfully, watches the three of them in the park, and you actually for once feel sorry for him because he knows Malcolm is his child but Malcolm will never be a part of his life. He ends the movie speaking to the camera and, to those who may envy his way with the fair sex, laments that he does not have “peace of mind”, and that he probably never will.

The English films are almost always better than American films. More honest, less sophomoric, more adult, and more candid. “Alfie” is definitely one of those films. Michael Caine gives the performance of a lifetime, with the support of a superb cast, under the great direction of Lewis Gilbert. If you want a light, frothy comedy, look elsewhere. But if you are interested in human relations, character studies, and fine performances, you must see “Alfie” (this review refers to the ORIGINAL film :-)

“Alfie,” released in 1966, is considered one of the most famous, influential movies of that decade. It’s credited with being a classic study of the 60’s, and introducing London to the world, just as it began to swing. Also with making a big star of its star, Michael Caine, although by this time Caine had already starred in “The Ipcress File,” and stolen “Zulu,” a dandy war movie, out from under Stanley Baker. No matter, “Alfie” is still considered the sexy, handsome young Caine’s star-making turn. The part, that of a London cockney lad about town, is one he was born to: he was, in fact, born to be a Covent Garden barrow boy (that is, a man selling fruits and vegetables from a wheelbarrow in the open-air market), as was his father before him.

Alfie (Caine) is a London limo driver, a job that enables him to meet girls, girls, girls, and he does. Uses them, abuses them, moves on. The movie’s based on the stage play of the same name by Bill Naughton, who adapted it for the screen, and was directed by Lewis Gilbert. It won five Oscar nominations, seven other awards, and 16 more miscellaneous nominations. Terence Stamp, cockney himself, and possibly the handsomest man alive at that time, was playing the title role on Broadway, but refused the movie, as he thought it “too immoral.” Filmed on location in London and environs, Naughton “opened up” the play by adding many Thamesside scenes, making the mighty river another, mood-setting, reminding-us-of-eternity, character. Denholm Elliott has one unforgettable scene; Sydney Tafler and other cockney types provided Caine with excellent support; some of the women in Alfie’s life were played by Shelley Winters, Jane Asher, Shirley Anne Field, Vivien Merchant, and Eleanor Bron.

When the movie first opened, it was accompanied only by a jazzy Sonny Rollins score. To sweeten things up a bit, the famous, award-winning song, “What’s It All About, Alfie,” was commissioned from Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song, done by Cher for the American market, and Cilla Black for the English, was spliced into the movie. (Of course, Dionne Warwick had the big hit with it, on both sides of the Atlantic.) The song, however, is not an accurate summation of the movie, as it is generally considered. The song famously asks, “Is it just for the moment we live? Are we meant to take more than we give?” Well, Alfie, as Caine plays him, knows that he’s been trying to live only for the moment, and that he’s been taking far more than he’s been giving, and he knows where it’s gotten him.

He knows that he dislikes women — calls them “birds,” and occcasionally, jarringly, “it.” But he knows their power. He knows he has no education, money or position, and a woman such as the doctor Eleanor Bron plays has no interest in him. He knows he’s alone, and getting older; were he to forget, Shelley Winters, in the part she was born to play, a rich American, is there to remind him. He knows that he’s lost two sons, one by a second-stringer of his who married a nice man to get the support she needed. One by the character played by the greatly-admired Vivien Merchant, a married woman who feels an abortion is necessary.

The scene where Alfie recognizes just what abortion means is the most powerful in the movie. “You reap what you sow,” is the lesson he’s forced to relearn, and it’s a painful one. At the end of the movie, he stands and faces the camera, says he’s gotten the better of the many women in his life, and yet, they’ve moved on, presumably to happiness, and he has nothing, not even his “peace of mind.” Our Alfie has been forced to learn what it’s all about.
