I’m 44 years old-fashioned and was 5 years dilapidated when this series ran on TV. I can unexcited remember the anxiety and fascination of area in the mid-1960s, which at the time was completely original terrain. Giant blobs, tentacled creatures, plastic ray guns, laser beams - it didn’t matter what tricks the producers employed, it was all Unusual STUFF as far as I was concerned. Of course, if you compare the props, effects and plots with today’s sci-fi, you’d probably burst out laughing and scoff at how worn it was befriend then. Then again, you don’t consume this DVD station for realism, or for cutting-edge special effects or even for the acting. Neither do you lift it because it pioneered the scores of plot adventures that came later, like The Invaders, Flash Gordon or Star Wobble. Instead, you hold it because you want to remember how it was when you were 5 years traditional and you sat in your parents’ living room, hunched over a black-and-white TV situation, frightened out of your wits, yet thrilled to bits at the harrowing adventures of the Robinsons. You assume it because maybe even at that young age, you had a crush on Penny Robinson (Angela Cartwright) and you want to try and select that feeling again, which at the time was also Novel STUFF to you. So this is first and foremost a fling down memory lane and it won’t appeal to anyone who never watched the indicate as a kid. For fellow reviewers who have expressed disappointment and have said they felt let down, I ask you - what the hell did you seek information from?

Now this is how to do the genre!

This is brilliantly laughable, poignant and tender, but never insipid (the director is Australia…so insipidness is definitely out) movie. Matthau is truly incredible as Einstein, as are his three sidekicks (especially Godel! and the tree that likes to eat their stuff!) as they try to manuever the two leads together and buy the Lesser Professor, a.k.a the rat man, Chimp Pimp, etc from the picture: the stuffy english fiance of Meg Ryan’s Character, played perfectly by Stephen Frey. Of course the Lesser Professor is trying to hang on to Meg Ryan’s character and prove Tim Robbin’s character as a fraud because of his unique found friendhsip with Einstein and the secret paper they’re working on so Tim Robbin’s character can sign Meg Ryan’s charater with ‘his genius’ because that is what she looks for in a man- a genetic hope of making genius children so she, lacking in her beget confidence, can finish through her children. MEg Ryan’s character is Eistein’s neice.

I can’t understand how Matthau didn’t glean a best supporting actor nomination for this movie! He is so favorable, as is all the cast: they fit perfectly, especially the ‘four boys’.

The sage is fairly linear but well paced. It does deal with a lesser theme of self opinion, being yourself, and sexual equality and that gleaming men can be have intelligent women as their equal, or betters. The main theme is not letting the brain rule the heart too distinguished, and to be gratified. And that some things-love- defy science!

I can’t believe of any movie like this one. Its original, clever, witty and subtle at times (especially the humor: Einstein on a motorbike going wah-hoo…very cold!) . So if you like your movies sophisticated, wholesome, unprejudiced, stylish and not contrived then you defintely want to peruse this one! The cinematography and ‘fifty-ness’ is astounding!

Definitely 5 stars! More even…!

DVD is very plain: honest the movie. No added features or even bio’s for that matter. But with a movie this obliging, who needs them? The describe and sound quality are top notch.

Longer ago than I care to remember I had the mountainous fortune to meet Einstein. I was an under grad in college when he made one of his unannounced visits to the campus. Walter Matthau captures the professor briliantly and his humor and wit advance through in this film. Einstein’s interest in motorcycles and his appreciate of sailing are portrayed lovingly and the very human side of the broad man is illustrated with fidelity and humor. It is always on my list of ten current films.

I’m a fan of Project Runway and found I liked this miniature documentary very appetizing. Seamless gives us a very exact gawk into a struggling fashion designers world, no 8 hour challenges, no making clothes from flowers; fair genuine people trying to gather their struggling business to become a thriving, money making business. The 3 featured designers/design partners had all different personalities and made me want to go research them more.

As a fan of Project Runway, I was thrilled to learn about Seamless, a documentary of the fashion world and young designers.

I truly enjoyed Seamless as it did describe the reality of the fashion world and struggles of the young designers to fabricate it. (Like Heidi Klum always say, “one day you’re in; the next day, you’re out”.) These designers are aware that fashion is highly competitive where many don’t do it or experience short-lived success before folding. Those that are smooth existing and struggling, especially after 9/11, are in dire need of finances or mentorship. This is where Vogue, celebrated fashion designers and other “head honchos” near in to serve out, via competition.

I do wish that the documentary was longer by following the other designers or by covering more aspects of fashion designing, production, etc. I liked how the documentary followed their personal lives, which made them like regular people… Doo-Ri and the fire, Alexandre and his transcontinental separation from his wife, and Lazaro and Jack’s adjustment to one’s relocation.

Since I’ve been watching a ton of Eurohorror classics lately, now is as trustworthy as a time as any to say a few words about “Daughters of Darkness.” I made a assure some time ago to ignore vampire films as a general rule. It’s not that I strongly disapprove all vampire films, mind you, but I fair feel like the genre has been done to death over the years. How many versions of Dracula can you sight before your eyes begin rolling over the predictability of it all? The plots are all essentially the same, suitable? You’ve got the obligatory virgin, the dashing young lad, the wizened vampire hunter, and reliable frail Drac himself ambling around in the dismal tormenting the others. A bunch of people tumble prey to the vampire, the hunter teams up with the young man in an worry to achieve the young girl, and a stake through the venerable ticker aesthetic great wraps the whole thing up. Well, a bit of experience reveals quite a few films that play around with this tried and honest formula. One method to do something different, if these European flicks are any indication, is to punch up the proceedings with a favorable helping of bare flesh. There’s nothing like a bunch of gals trooping around in revealing outfits, or no outfits at all, to perk up the dead outmoded Stoker chronicle. And if you can compose the head vampire a woman, that certainly can’t wound either. Welcome to “Daughters of Darkness.”

Something curious and amazing is going on in this movie, but you have to wait awhile to leer it. The represent starts out by showing us two freshly wedded lovebirds, Valerie (Danielle Ouimet) and Stefan (John Karlen), heading to the European glide on a express. Ostensibly, the two married in secret and are now going to head over to England to meet Stefan’s domineering mother. Valerie worries whether the woman (ha!) will collect her since Stefan makes it abundantly positive that his beloved mother is quite picky about her son’s girlfriends. Stefan assures Valerie all will go well, but it soon becomes apparent that he isn’t hurrying to score to England. While waiting for the ship that will select them home, the two check into a massively creepy hotel on the sail. No other guests are staying in the building since it’s out of season, so Valerie and Stefan have the heavenly building all to themselves. That is until Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Delphine Seyrig) and her shapely companion Ilona (Andrea Rau) advance on the scene in a vintage automobile. Most of us are aware that Elizabeth Bathory was a celebrated sixteenth century Hungarian noblewoman who supposedly kept herself eternally young by bathing in vats filled with the blood of young maidens. Unfortunately, Valerie and Stefan don’t create the connection.

Still, the newlyweds grow increasingly aware that something isn’t correct with the radiant countess. First, it’s rather queer that the hotel manager claims that he remembers Countess Elizabeth showing up at the hotel nearly fifty years before looking exactly as she does now. Second, she’s downright creepy. There’s something hidden slack her horrific grin that makes you want to cry. Second, the Countess Elizabeth takes an fantastic interest in the activities of the couple. She always seems to appear whenever Stefan and Valerie leave their room, grinning that heinous grin and cooing like a cat over the two newlyweds. Bathory seems to have an contemplate for the pretty Valerie, too, which makes sense when we examine exactly why Ilona follows her around like a puppy. It turns out history made a mistake about the blood vats, not recognizing or refusing to narrate that Bathory was really a vampire with a penchant for young gals. She’s roamed Europe for over three hundred years playing the same bloody game, a game that now threatens to rip apart forever this hapless couple. In no time at all, Elizabeth manages to drive a wedge between the Stefan and Valerie, recruit the latter to her thirsty cause, and wreak a whole heck of a lot of havoc in the hotel.

You honest gotta savor this film. “Daughters of Darkness” is one of the best vampire films I have ever seen for a multitude of reasons. The critical reason the describe succeeds is due to the fantastic talents of Delphine Seyrig. Who is this intelligent woman and where has she been all my life? I esteem this lady! She manages to do her character insanely aesthetic and metaphysically eerie at the same time. She slinks around in intelligent outfits dropping suggestive comments, tells horribly gory stories, winks, and grins with the greatest of ease. And her fate at the slay of the film is unpleasant and disturbing. Unbiased as superb as Seyrig is the oppressive atmosphere of the hotel and the desolate surroundings. Characters travel around outside under overcast skies and through pouring rain. Forests nearby are dense and spooky. Every residence section seems to telegraph a sense of impending doom for the film’s participants. Finally, you simply won’t acquire your eyes when Stefan calls his mother on the phone. What was director Harry Kumel thinking here? What an incredibly bizarre scene to insert into the narrate! Oh man, you unprejudiced won’t comprehend the insanity of it!

“Daughters of Darkness” deserves five stars for its fabulous performances and over the top antics. I can’t thank Blue Underground enough for releasing this esteem on DVD. While the print transfer occasionally suffers from some minor blemishes and fading colors, most of the movie looks mountainous. Extras include two commentary tracks, radio spots, a trailer, stills, and an interview with Andrea Rau. Race, don’t slither, to assume up a copy of this underrated gem.

The idea of “vampirism” has always had ties to unlit and forbidden sides of human sexuality, and has served as metaphor for homosexuality, nymphomania, and maochism. The sexual revolution of tedious 60’s and early 70’s produced a bevy of erotic, “lesbian” vampire films, in which their creators were able to graphically exploit all manner of sexual taboos that had only been hinted at previously. DVDs have given us a amazing cross-section of these forbidden fruits from Jess Franco’s psychedelic Vampiros Lesbos to the surreal-dreamy trappings of Jean Rollin’s Shiver Of The Vampires, but Daughter’s of Darkness is for many (myself included) is the cream of the slit.

Daughter’s is kind of a hybrid between Sheridan Fornau’s often-filmed vampire legend, Carmilla, and the many legends and exploits of real-life “vampire” Elizabeth Bathory. Brought into the display, the film begins with the arrival of two newlyweds, Stephan & Valerie (John Karlen & Danielle Quimet), to a dusky and mostly deserted beachfront hotel in Belgium. From the onset we sight all is not correct with this union, Stephan refuses to dispute his “mother” of their marriage and is revealing an calm and sadistic temperament, which Valerie mournfully tolerates. Out of the night arrives the Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Delphine Seyrig) and her sultry companion/accomplice Ilona (Andrea Rau) . The Countess takes an immediate, carnal interest in the young newlyweds, and especially in Valerie. Meanwhile there seems to be a rash of murders in the nearby villages in which the young female victims have been drained of all their blood. Before long the countess and her reluctant companion have seduced the haunted newlyweds, and this is where the fun begins.

Though many erotic vampire films of the time boast involving visuals & copious nudity, director Harry Kummel clearly meant Daughters of Darkness to be more than a thinly veiled soft-core “art film”. Not that it’s minus these elements, Daughters’ is quite explicit, but it’s also a sophisticated and highly styled fright film laced with bewildering moments of black-comedy. In short, it’s delightfully European.

As the ageless and decadent Elizabeth Bathory, Euro-star Delphine Seryig is without look. More often than not, female erotic-vampires are portrayed as baleful, unwilling victims of their fill desires, but not Elisabeth. The Countess takes gigantic pride in her wickedness, and done-up like a thirties Marline Dietrich, Seyrig is believable and silly, but never corny as she gleefully corrupts all that she touches.

Blue Underground’s anamorphic transfer of Daughters is a immense improvement over the early Anchor Bay edition. Though utilizing the same source, Blue Undergrounds mastering is sharper, the colors are more stable and it’s free of the bleeding and artifacts that plague the previous release. It quiet contains the commentary track with male lead John Karlen, but raises the stakes greatly with an additional commentary track with director Harry Kumel, an onscreen interview with actress Andrea Rau, an safe theatrical trailer, radio spots, and a poster and aloof gallery. Priced at $20 (or less) this is an considerable up-grade for Euro-horror fans and an gracious entry for the Euro-curious.

The negate of the DVD today has yielded a few surprises. There is some engaging material included in the DVD with the Theatrical Trailer, Interviews with the Director and Robert Shaw and also a short Murky and White film is shown on how it was filmed including footage of the German military advisor who insured an proper detailing of uniforms, events, etc. in this basically fictitious story of the illustrious battle of world war 2. Now what needs to be said is that this is a polished transfer of the widescreen film. The overture is achieve assist and all of the extras that were usually slit. Including the “Panzerlied” gathering of tank commanders that is sometimes missing from television broadcasts as well as the “set the son but shoot the father” scene. The musical gain by Frankel is one of the best made in a war film presentation in a burly orchestra by the Novel philharmonic. They have restored the unique soundtrack to the DVD and it is impressive for a movie that was made in the 60’s. Someone cared about putting this one succor together and it shows! Graphics, scenery, etc. are all very impressive. Although this movie was panned as to accuracy as far as the space, it is a very engrossing movie and is well remembered by everyone who saw it in the movies when it was released. Seeing it again now, it is as if I were help in that movie house and as if time had not moved on. A Astronomical release! Worth it to any fan of this film.

This is a classic war movie. Though lacking historical realism, its collected an delectable film. Lots of tanks anyway. Mammoth name actors (Fonda, Bronson, Andrews, Shaw, Savalas, and the like) . Not really about the valid Battle Of The Bulge, it takes some of the events from that notorious battle and remolds it into a kinda ‘what-if’ account about a German armoured spearhead that launches an attack to crop off Allied forces, to remove time to get the novel jet aircraft and nuclear weapons and bag the war. Names of characters are all fiction.

What really disappoints me is that a lot of footage (at least 20 minutes worth) has been crop out from the unusual print. Please, Warner, release the Beefy version on DVD!

It seems like the only scheme anyone hears about this movie, its either from fanatic word of mouth or from seeing it sitting in Blockbusters. Thats a shame, because this first outing by director Troy Duffy is an extremely frosty film that deserves all the attention it can glean.

Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus play two suited ole Irish Catholic boys in Boston, who one day glean sick of the corruption in the city and commence a bloody crusade to wipe it out. Willem DaFoe plays the FBI agent hot on their creep, who is torn between bringing the mysterious vigilantes to justice, or joining their crusade.

The film is, simply attach, wintry. Its one of the only movies that actually produce going to church observe frigid. Don’t be fooled by the description, however; this is not an action movie. Do not seek information from blazing gun battles with crazy angles and MTV like editing. This is a film about morality, doing what one thinks is upright, and having codes of honour. It’s about all those things, and how conclude they may sometimes accumulate to walking the edge between proper and disagreeable.

The two actors who play the Irish vigilantes are ample in their roles, playing the boys not as superheroes, but as regular joes with a enormous chip on their shoulder. A nice twist in the film is DaFoe’s portrayel of the FBI agent, who also happens to be jubilant. He plays him as a big character without being tempted to dip into stereotypes. Immense job by the versatile actor.

This is definately a movie not to be missed. If you are fortunate to witness this in your video store, acquire it out and like.

It only takes a few minutes to design a comparison between Troy Duffy’s “The Boondock Saints” and almost any Quentin Tarentino film. As I watched this breathtaking movie, I snickered to myself over realizing this exiguous fact. I figured few others would earn the connection. Boy, was I faulty! It seems that anyone who has seen “Boondock Saints” immediately thinks of “Pulp Fiction” or “Reservoir Dogs.” Moreover, a lot of people do not like the notion of Duffy ripping off such a genuine American icon. Perhaps they have forgotten that Tarentino has based his entire career on borrowing or outright ripping off ideas from 1960s and 1970s cinema. I could care less whether Duffy imitated “Pulp Fiction” or whether he arrived at this belief on his possess. Hollywood routinely begs, borrows, and steals in an trouble to earn a buck. The novel trend of remaking older films is only one aspect of this philosophy, so complaining about some filmmaker copying a specific style is a moot point. “The Boondock Saints” is an enormously racy draw to exhaust a couple of hours and, despite a few flaws, may carry out a cult place rivaling anything made by Quentin Tarentino. This is how it should be.

Connor and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus respectively) are two Irish brothers who utilize their days drinking at the local pub and working in a local meatpacking plant. They don’t do considerable with their free time outside of lounging around their filthy loft and hanging around with unbalanced people like their friend David Rocco, a minor criminal who longs to join the local branch of the mafia. Danger rears its homely head when some Russian gangsters disappear into the neighborhood and threaten to halt down the neighborhood bar. After a fistfight leads to a couple of killings in an alley, the boys realize they may be in a status of difficulty with local law enforcement. Actually, they are in more misfortune than they realize at first when an FBI agent by the name of Paul Smecker arrives on the scene. The inept local cops stand around throwing out all sorts of curious, implausible theories about these corpses in the alleyway, but Smecker moves in and figures it all out in an enormously hilarious and ingenious plot. By slapping on some headphones pumping out classical music and prancing around the scene checking things out, Smecker tells the cops what happened, when it happened, and who probably did it. Positive enough, the MacManus boys sheepishly approach at the local cop shop, bloodied and bandaged from their tussle with the Russkies, and confess to the crime.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Boondock Saints! Click Here

Fortunately for Connor and Murphy, Agent Smecker takes a genuine shine to these gregarious youngsters and releases them from jail. After all, the whole incident was merely a case of self-defense gone horribly bloody. But something unusual happens to the MacManus brothers after this incident; they suddenly reflect they receive a calling from God to rid the streets of criminals. Checking in at the local armory of the Irish Republican Army (this is Boston, after all) and arming themselves to the teeth, Connor and Murphy exhaust information gleaned from their encounter with the low-level mafia goons to stage a mission against the bosses of the Russian Mob. Other jobs soon follow, all apparently sanctioned and sanctified by the Almighty. The boys are so successful they soon scheme in the assistance of David Rocco, who, with his tall knowledge of Boston’s underworld, provides a list of criminals who deserve to die. As the body count rises, Smecker comes closer to learning the identities of these homegrown vigilantes. The fact that the FBI agent undergoes a crisis of conscience over the crimes–he fast realizes these murders are the work of citizens fed up with crime–leads him to secretly relieve the men responsible for the killings. Throw in a bunch of Mafia thugs, adult film star Ron Jeremy as a doomed hoodlum, a vicious, mystical killer named “Il Duce” (played by Billy Connolly, mild atoning for “Head of the Class”), stylish gunplay, and an exploding cat and you have all the makings of this well-behaved movie.

“The Boondock Saints” is a film about vigilantism and whether that activity is ever justifiable, although that theme seems to proceed for most of the movie. The conclusion, too, ends up being impartial a exiguous too implausible, but getting there is a boatload of fun. The best things about Duffy’s film are the whipsaw mercurial dialogue, the hilarious running gags, and Willem Dafoe as Agent Paul Smecker. Dafoe especially deserves accolades for his portrayal of a conflicted FBI agent whose sympathies eventually turn to the MacManus brothers. His scheme of solving crimes, especially the shootout between Il Duce and the two vigilantes, is not only brilliantly executed but a wonder to view. Moreover, Smecker’s interactions with the local Irish cops provide endless opportunities for colossal dialogue and hilarious jokes.

Regrettably, a bit of overacting at obvious points of the film speedily annoys, as does the failure to provide anything more than lip service to vigilantism and how it pertains to our ultra violent world, but “The Boondock Saints” is so noteworthy fun despite these flaws that you will hardly gawk them. The DVD includes many extras, such as vital deleted scenes, a commentary by Troy Duffy, and a widescreen presentation. There’s even talk of an impending sequel, although the absence of the Willem Dafoe character, if the reports are accurate, could cause principal problems. There is not any other intention to say it: if you have not seen “The Boondock Saints,” rush, do not dash, to the local video store and bewitch or rent a copy today.

Berkeley in the Sixties is a well done documentary which does an excellent job of communicating the issues and events of one of the most pivotal decades of the twentieth century. Berkeley was the center of the social upheaval which defined the sixties and understanding what happened there helps us to understand the change and chaos which woke up America. Although a documentary, this video is amazingly easy to watch. While its appeal is no doubt greatest to those of us who were part of the events depicted, I think it would also interest anyone who would like to better understand what really happened during that time. It would be equally useful in an American history class or as an evening’s entertainment. We have seen in several times in our home and it remains a favorite.

This is a superb, valuable documentary.

Berkeley was at the epicenter as the counterculture politics of the ’60s emerged. And revisiting the political ferment of ’60s Berkeley can offer an unusually helpful overview of these interwoven political currents. This film does that very, very well. It rises far,far above films which simply recount the intense experimentation with sex, drugs & rock ‘n’ roll that eventually characterized the counterculture. This film focuses on the often-less-understood, and fascinating, politics of the time.

The fascinating footage (including early glimpses at Reagan as a

relatively new “pol”), the deft editing, the years-later retrospective reflections of “now-grown-up” participants in the Berkeley “FSM” (Free Speech Movement) — these are all very engaging, and beautifully assembled. But what makes the film great for me is its clarity in reflecting the interplay of counterculture themes: the movements for free speech and for civil rights, the movement against the Vietnam War, and assertion of the new feminism. Along with the energetic pursuit of “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,” these elements - blended into one ‘tsunami’ of a movement — were experienced by us all coming of age during that time, throughout the US and throughout much of the world. But as a young person during that era, who became very swept up in the self-proclaimed “dawning of the Age of Aquarius,” I recall also feeling unclear on how these ideological components — which otherwise seemed to me distinct and substantively unrelated - became intertwined in the social politics of that era.

Whether the film is slanted, and whether “The Movement” was positive or negative, seem to me besides the point. The Movement was; like it or not, that reality is indisputable. From varying perspectives, our entire culture experienced it, and was affected by it. Most of the many millions of us on college campuses during that time were forever changed — for good, for ill, or both. This film presents the most coherent depiction I’ve seen of how this happened, what it’s “logic” was - and manages to do so engagingly, without becoming pedantic. That’s a whole lot for one film to do, even for someone who respects and loves film as our culture’s greatest current art form.
