Thundercats was one of the best shows to come out of the 80s (Transformers being at the top), and one every fan has been eagerly awaiting to hit DVD.

Months ago, WB finally announced they would be releasing the series in a total of four box sets (33/32/33/32), which had everyone cheering for the return of one of their favories shows, in top notch DVD quality. Most of all, they were given a SRP of $64.99, thus guaranteeing the episodes must be remastered. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

For a SRP of $64.99, you get 33 episodes on six discs, but without any remastering done whatsoever. What was WB thinking? Not only do the episodes look like they were dumped down from VHS tapes (giving it a bootleg quality appearance), but there are a mass amount of errors throughout the episodes themselves. One of the major issues is with the second episode, “Unholy Alliance,” which is missing all of the music (sans the opening and closing) during the episodes. However, this is only the case in the English track as both the Spanish and French versions have the music playing. Whatever the reason is, this is totally unacceptable. Hopefully WB will issue a recall and offer replacement discs.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Thundercats - Season One, Volume One! Click Here

The next negative to this set is that it is definitely no where near woth a SRP of $64.99. Yes, you can buy them cheaper online or at a retail store, but if you pay more than $30-35 for this set, then you were just ripped off. You could buy a DVD-R bootleg (not that you should) off ebay of the entire series in the same quality (if not better) for $15 more.

With other 80’s shows, coming out (or have already been released) with a beautiful remastered print, and 5.1 audio, this makes this buy even worse than it seemed before. Why couldn’t WB let Rhino handle this? Rhino may have their own faults, but at least they know how to NOT mess up a release THIS bad. Not to mention Rhino would have remastered the prints and mastera a 5.1 track, while this just has a less-than-satisfying-and-boring mono soundtrack.

So if you have not bought this set yet, hold off until WB fixes the set’s glitches or lowers the SRP. Also, let’s hope they do a much better job with Volume 2 when it comes out in Dec than they did with this. I love Thundercats, I am happy to own it on DVD and replace my tapes from Toonami, however, the price is unacceptable for a crappy release as this.

WB, Thundercats deserves to be treated just with respect as you have done so with Looney Tunes, and as much as Rhino did so with Transformers!

At long last, the DVD set we’ve all been waiting for since 1985: Thunder-Thunder-Thunder-ThunderCats! I don’t have to tell you the ThunderCats was/is/and always will be the absolute finest animated series ever produced. Unfortunately, however, this release comes with a couple of flaws. On the plus side, the set consists of 6 single-sided discs - not those hated “flippers” as originally reported. The box/case art is sensational; you’ll be proud to display this on your DVD shelf. The picture quality is pretty good most of the time; the mono sound is just OK. BUT, the most important episodes in the series, the first and the second, are botched! In the early part of “Exodus,” the picture sort of starts to roll for a few seconds while Jaga is talking to Lion-O after the destruction of Thundera. This alone is enough to make a person think they’ve got a defective disc, but the most jarring glitch doesn’t show up till the second episode (for which NO TITLE appears on the screen). Yes, fellow super-fans, it appears that Monkian was at the controls during the transfer of “Unholy Alliance” from VHS to DVD, as the version presented here is TOTALLY devoid of the familiar ThunderCat background music! Unbelievably, the very first time we visit the tomb of the dreaded Mumm-Ra…the very first time we witness his horrific transformation from his decayed form to the terrifying “Ever Living Source of Evil”…the very first time he’s sent screaming and crying back to his foul sarcophagus by the mighty Lord of the ThunderCats and his mystic Sword of Omens …we hear NO MUSIC! If you want to hear background music during “Unholy Alliance,” you must either A: Select the Spanish-language track, B: Select the French-language track, or C: Telephone Will Wheaton and his tone-deaf friends and ask them to come over to your house and sing the ThunderCats theme out of tune for you while you watch! This is an outrage! My video-taped version of “Unholy Alliance” (which I recorded from Cartoon Network a few years back) has background music, and my video-taped version of “Exodus” doesn’t have a rolling picture after Thundera’s destruction; why should the DVD version have these problems? With great trepidation, I watched the other 31 episodes in this set and found no major abnormalities, aside from an occasional lack of smoothness in the animation and some grain here and there. Of course all the episodes are CLASSIC, and feature legendary characters like the Berbils; the Warrior Maidens; the Brute Men; the Unicorn Keepers; Snowman and Snowmeow; Hammer Hand; Ratar-O; Wizz-Ra; Mongor; Grune the Destroyer; Hachiman; Safari Joe; Dr. Dometome; Quick Pick; Captain Cracker; and Mandora the Evil Chaser…just to name a few. I firmly believe that every man, woman, and child in the world should watch at least one episode of the ThunderCats every single day for their entire lives; that’s why everyone needs to buy this set…despite the aforementioned glitches. I also think that everyone who buys this set should call, write or e-mail Warner Bros. and DEMAND a corrected version of disc 1. HOOOOOOOOOO!

I didn’t want to just write a review about my initial response to the new box design because I think we all know how we as fans feel about that. First I wanted to give actual information about the set to people who are unsure or when shopping on Amazon don’t want to be bothered to look on tv.com for episode lists.

The set contains the following episodes from Season Eleven:

Beyond Blunderdome- Mel Gibson and Homer team up

It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Marge- Otto’s girlfriend moves in with the simpsons, Marge gets paranoid.

Behind the Laughter- A parody of behind the music.

Those are the episodes for anyone wondering. As for the box, Amazon sells the limited edition Krusty head cheaper but it is the same as the regular box but with a krusty face rubber cemented on, the same stuff used to hold on the listing of episodes on the back of all previous box sets, so you can remove it and have the regular box but I don’t know how much damage the stuff is capable of if it bonds too much and I’d rather just pay more for the other one. The inside of the box is very disappointing, we all know and seem to agree, the cardboard is a bad idea because it defeats the most important purpose of the box set which is to keep our discs well stored and accessable. The tight carboard slots rather than plastic holders make it more difficult to get at our discs and store them properly, though I haven’t had problems with it yet I foresee down the road a few years when the constant contact with cardboard will erode and scratch the discs no matter how careful I always am. We buy boxsets to own the episodes and be able to keep them so why make a set that won’t preserve the life of the discs? It’s not for the enviroment or they wouldn’t use that wasteful Krusty head on it or use non-biodegradable cardboard. I think it is just laziness or a bad idea.

Anyway everyone debates their last great season of the Simpsons and this is the one truly great last season for me. Opening with Mel Gibson and ending on the Behind the Music Parody it’s entertaining from beginning to end. Twelve and thirteen move further into a bad place in the series where for some of us who grew up on it it became too hard to relate to anymore. I stopped watching completely by the end of thirteen. From here the comedy gets more obvious and straight forward and rather than the quick, rapid fire joke pacing they developed (and Family guy came out with and became known for) they move to a place where they hold on a joke for too long and seem to try too hard. It feels to me like they wrote it trying to make it funny to other people when the rule of comedy is to write something you find funny and so will other people.

Great episodes on the set, commentaries and extras are what they always are and provide some viewers entertainment, I find the commentaries rather amusing as they poke fun at themselves and you can see here that they really find what they wrote in those years amusing. Packaging seems to be everyones sore spot here and I agree but sadly am used to Fox disappointing me in these recent years, first by stopping the release of King of the Hill box sets before the last great seasons and second by only releasing the first season of Malcolm in the Middle and finally with the huge amount of time they took in releasing the Simpson box sets thus far. Thankfully I will only be buying season twelve and then after that I’m finally done with Fox and their dreadful box sets. (What happened to the days of Futurama volumes 1-4, those sets were excellent).

PS.

People in America think they’ve had trouble with the sets but I live in Canada and besides the set back of season 6 and this recent development with 11 I also had them screw me up on season 8 by changing the titling on the side of the boxes to include les Simpson reverting the Simpsons to half the size to make room (since they have moved both around numerous times on following sets in experimentations but none ever match the previous box sets in the series). With the distinctive art of the show on the cover and the name simpsons in yellow on it you think anyone in any language could tell what this is without specific useless articles of speech being translated. Now I buy from the US. GOB BLESS THE USA.

Thanks For Your Time.

Welcome to the eleventh (!) season of “The Simpsons”, one of the best and longest lasting shows on television! With this season you get some of the greatest episodes, including one of my personal favorites, “Behind the Laughter”. Of course you also get some wonderful commentaries, which are always entertaining, and the usual raft of extras. All in all, a great set, with one notable exception.

The packaging bites. Totally bites.

The producers of “The Simpsons” and “Futurama” seem to have got it into their heads that making “green” packaging for their DVD’s is somehow better. This is also seen with movies such as “There Will Be Blood”. Basically what it boils down to is “cheap, cardboard packaging that is almost guaranteed to damage your DVD’s when you remove them.”

The packaging for this season of “The Simpsons” is particularly notable for this failing. The disks are jammed inside tight cardboard sleeves. When you remove them, you’re almost going to have to grip them by the top and bottom, promising tons of fingerprints. Unless you’re very careful, you’re also likely to scratch them.

I understand the idea of wanting to not fill up our landfills with tons of plastic, but really, people. How many of you bought the previous seasons of the show on DVD and then threw away the plastic trays that the discs were in? Not many, I’m wagering.

So five stars for the show and, much as it pains me to do it, only one for the packaging. Thus the set gets a sad little three stars and no love.

I’ll start by saying that this anime is too long. There are way too many episodes in this series. I know what you’re thinking. Thirteen is the absolute lowest an anime can go without becoming an OVA. And that’s exactly my point. The last few episodes is where the gold is in this anime, and really a lot of the episodes never followed any real story line. This would have been a great OVA, had they done some episode editing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mezzo - Complete Collection! Click Here

Case in point, the first episode is about ghosts (with another episode later on also being about a ghost), the second is about aliens, the third about biological disasters, another episode deals with androids, and another with virtual reality. Though it all follows in line with the concept of the anime, it doesn’t progress the story line in any way. In fact, two of the episodes, the last two on the first disc, goes back to the much more dangerous and adult Mezzo Forte in the form of flashbacks. You’d think this a good thing, but the obvious difference between the two makes the Mezzo series look terrible beside its prologue, Mezzo Forte. The animation quality in Mezzo Forte was just too good.

That’s not to say that this anime was all bad. The characters, for one, are hilarious. Mikura is the gunslinger/beautiful-chick that is common in this genre who gets a certain amount of pleasure out of the violence she dishes out. Kurokawa is an ex-cop who knows the darker side of his former job, and who also loves to eat noodles, and Harada is the brains of the bunch, who seems to have a crush on Mikura that never comes through in the story. Also, there are the weird Black Scissors, a gang of assassins and underworld thugs; little Asami, the protege; a mysterious assassin that was seemingly hired to kill Kurokawa, but by who?; and a cat-faced police chief who supplies the DSA with their ammunition.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mezzo - Complete Collection! Click Here

The story also isn’t that bad, when it finally kicks in. Without spoiling much, the last five episodes involves a look into the underworld as well as a peak into the world of crooked cops. The story itself is driven by action packed scenes–gun fights, fist fights, explosions, car chases, and the like–along with a lot of comedy, even when it starts to get serious. The common theme in every episode, however, is that the DSA (Danger Service Agency) will accept any dangerous job given them, for a price.

I can’t recommend this anime for the casual fan. Even the value of the box set wouldn’t make it worth someone who has only watched the anime on Adult Swim. I also can’t recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Mezzo Forte, as the face-lift this series had to go through to make it more “watch-able” seems to alienate it from its much more violent and sex-filled prologue. However, if you enjoyed the cut version of Forte, and you’re curious about the characters left behind, then I can recommend this. I can also recommend this for anyone who like solid action with little nonsense.

who can ask for more. the ONLY complaint I have, the show was too short, not enough eps.

Big O season II picks up exactly where the first season left off. The style of the show, however, has noticably changed. Gone are the one episode stories that focused on aspects of the main characters, and a direct storyline is followed for the entire second season. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, however the inherent reliance on the first season episodes will make it hard for someone not acquainted with the Big O to follow (if you are interested in the plot of the first season, please consult the various Amazon.com pages for a summary).

The actual depth of storyline has also decreased with the second season. Granted, the first season of the Big O contains some extremely thought provoking episodes, but the second season just cannot compare. All that said, it is great that we were all given some closure (for those of you who don’t know, the first season ended in a cliffhanger a few years ago) on the situation in Paradigm City, with all the original Japanese voice talent intact. Those of you who have never seen the Big O before are still in for a treat, and hardened Big O veterans will get enjoyment from seeing their favorite Negotiator back in action.

Fans of the modern anime masterpiece The Big O can finally stop holding their breaths, as the long-awaited sequel to everyone’s favorite new giant robot series arrives…

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Big O II - Paradigm Lost! Click Here

When the last series left off, our hero Rodger was wounded, in the pilot seat, outgunned, and outnumbered. Things were just about to start to get interesting… Amazingly, unlike the first Big O where mystery followed mystery and plot points and characters were developed slowly, this series gives you a one-two punch from the get-go and never slows down.

The change of pace will delight some, confuse others, and perhaps irritate those unwilling to adapt, but at no time does it fail to entertain. In the past Rodger Smith was always a cool, calm, collected individual that was always in command of the situation. The first episode shows us right into the heart of what makes up his world and how he relates to it, giving more character devlopment and introspection in that one episode than perhaps the entire first series did. And from there things just get crazier.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Big O II - Paradigm Lost! Click Here

Watching the first few dvds, it almost seems like the creators of this show decided “To heck with style, let’s just tell people what’s going on already!” Characters who before just talked in riddles (remember Dorothy and Rodger and Angel and Rodger’s conversations from Big O?) now S-P-E-L-L things out for you. In a way, the new directness of the show is very appealing, as the relationships of the characters evolve and they open-up to each other and become more honest and straight-forward.

And while the old style isn’t quite there in terms of animation and music (the dark noir-style is replaced by a more pastel-looking universe and more uptempo versions of the old themes are present from time to time), there are moments of sheer brilliance to be found. Some people found the music of the first Big O overly repetitive, and I agree (although the score was most excellent). The new Big O has some music that’s so dramatic and so moving, that it made me IMMEDIATELY purchase the soundtrack (a new version of the main theme which can only be called a “love theme” really takes the cake). The action sequences are also flashier, prettier, and in general, a bit cooler than before.

If you wanted your questions answered (How do Dorothy and Rodger really feel about each other? What is Rosewater after? Who is Angel REALLY working for? What’s OUTSIDE of Paradigm city?) then this series will probably be most satisfying to you. The plot really thickens this time around, with things getting more and more dramatic as the show progreses (to say nothing of more profound {get a load of all the religous references, and the questions on the nature of what makes a person human, what a person’s place is in the universe, and can a person change their destiny}). Big O II really is what a sequel should be. It’s not just more of the same, but an entirely new perspective on a universe and characters that we have grown to love. HIGHLY recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed 2012 The Odyssey as it gave me great insight into what is happening on the planet and hope for the future. So I was really looking forward to it’s sequel, Timewave 2013. With Hollywood films, rarely does a sequel measure up to the original but this one is even better than 2012 The Odyssey. With the growing intensity of the issues that are facing us, there is a precience about the film that is compelling.

Filmmaker Sharron Rose continues her journey into the mythos of 2012 and the future of humanity. Having met the Q’ero shaman/healers of Peru in the first film, she travels to the Sacred Valley of Peru to sit in a profound healing ceremony with them. This ceremony called a despacho, performed to release negativity and send out prayers, forms the though-line of the film.

As is 2012 the Odyssey, the film has many strong interviews with the experts. This time, in addition to many experts from the cast of 2012 The Odyssey, she brings in the wisdom of such writers and sages as Rianne Eisler who speaks about the partnership vs. dominator model of society and Dr. Jean Houston, who speaks about the message of the heart and the vast potential of humankind.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Timewave 2013: The Future Is Now - The Odyssey II! Click Here

While the film offers great insight into human potential and possibility, it does not shy away from the deep issues that face us. Whitley Strieber, who wrote the book upon which the film The Day After Tomorrow was based, brings great insight into the issue of global warming. Daniel Pinchbeck speaks of possible extinctions and the power of human ingenuity to overcome obstacles and create solutions.

I was also really touched by the words of Peruvian Shaman/Healer Don Umberto who had a very timely message for America. He said, ” America has great brilliance, a great head, but now that power must come down to the heart. Without the power of the heart we will not be able to think our way out of the problems.” He also said that America must take leadership in bringing peace to the world.

This is a serious and thoughtful film which takes us beyond 2012 into the nature of time and the human spirit. Highly recommended!

Having enjoyed 2012 The Odyssey, I was eagerly looking forward to this sequel. What a timely film! For anyone who is concerned with the deeper spiritual and social implications of the very tangible realties confronting us such as global warming, the economic meltdown, peak oil etc, this is the film to watch. The interviews, which are juxtiposed against an ancient Shamanic ceremony held in the Sacred Valley of Peru are excellent. I was also pleased to see the continuation of the Founding Fathers theme in the section on Benjamin Franklin. I highly recommend this film for anyone who wants to gain a new perspective on the challenges confronting us at this moment in history.

Liszt declared Schubert to be the most poetic musician who has ever lived and to this day, he can still be considered one of the greatest composers of all time. He paved the way for aspiring composers with his Romantic melodies. His compositional style progressed rapidly throughout his career, and by the time he died, at the age of 31, he had written a wide range of music in various genres including opera, chamber and solo piano music. For the first time, Kultur released a dramatization of the life and works of this legendary composer. The Double Life of Franz Schubert explores the last two years of Schubert’s life and features a large amount of music throughout the film. The movie begins with Schubert falling ill and his friend, poet Franz von Schober finding him and taking him to the hospital. As the doctors diagnose Schubert’s symptoms as syphilis, finds their cause and administer treatment, the composer conducts his own internal imaginative examination and constantly thinks back to moments and music from his past life. He recalls his strict father who didn’t want him to compose, his patron Michael Vogl, his friend Franz von Schober, and love of his life that inspired much of his music and knew he could never be with, Karoline Esterhazy. Some of Schubert’s greatest works had spurred from this horrific period in time, and this DVD thoroughly displays an interesting look at the struggles Schubert faced and the accomplishments he achieved throughout his life. The works that came from Schubert’s last two years of life reveal a composer increasingly meditating on the darker side of both his human psyche and human relationships. Schubert’s struggle with syphilis, a disease he began fighting in 1822, fuels this fascinating short docudrama. Rather than permit the affliction to destroy his remaining years, the gifted musician used his pains as inspirational fuel for some of his most famous works. Despite grim circumstances, Schubert doesn’t seem to regret abandoning teaching and his stern father to collaborate on an ill fated opera with the poet Franz Von Schober. Indeed, at the end of the film, it is said that Schubert’s greatest work was composed in this period. Like Mozart, I always wonder what more glorious music would have been made had Schubert not died so young. Anyone who watches this DVD will certainly appreciate Schubert and his music so much more after you witness the torture and harsh treatment he was put through by doctors, hospital workers, and supposed friends when he was suffering so much.

This is really a must for Franz Schubert lovers. It gives a good view on his last years and his difficulties to be recognized as musician by his father. The actor is perfect in his role and gives agreat dimension to this movie.

This film is a real revelation for American audiences; it concerns a black Englishman becoming internationally successful, during the 1930ies, because of his melodic voice which provides him the means to search for his African roots. He succeeds thanks to an African song he learned as a child and a medallion in his possession that his grands parents brought from Africa as slaves. For an American, his interactions with white Europeans is interesting and hardwarming. I particularly appreciate the prelude to the film that takes place in the early 19th century. Contrary to what is often found, the African village from which his ancestors came is not excessively Europeanized nor demonized. And very rare for this kind of story, its is both realistic and optimistic. Certain part of the film profit from superb photography. And in addition, the copy is good.

If you are a fan of old-school westerns…how can you truly go too far wrong with Burt Kennedy writing and directing and star power like Robert Mitchum (in any year) and Angie Dickinson (still smouldering in 1969)…not to mention Robert Walker Jr and David Carradine as the youth demographic.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Young Billy Young! Click Here

This isn’t a top tier Western or second tier…but middle of the road. However, I’m thrilled to have a decent looking widescreen print of it for around ten bucks as I love Robert Mitchum and hang on his every word. If you are a fan of his or Angies…pick it up. If you are searching for Westerns from the 60’s…there are many many more places to start than this one.

The screenplay was written by Burt Kennedy based upon the western novel WHO RIDES WITH WYATT? by Will Henry (or Clay Fisher, real name Henry Wilson Allen). Movie was also released under the title Who Rides With Kane? The theme song is sung by Robert Mitchum before, and after the movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Young Billy Young! Click Here

The plot is fairly straight forward, lawman (Ben Kane) seeks revenge against man (Frank Boone) who killed his son (son is played by Christopher Mitchum). Being appointed marshal of Lordsburg puts the killer within the lawman’s reach. Plot though differing from Will Henry’s book will hold the viewer’s attention, although we have seen similar plots in other movies, yet with the cast of this movie everything seems to work. I received more enjoyment in watching this western than I expected.

The cast as mentioned beyond Mitchum, Dickinson, and Walker, Jr. includes: David Carradine, Jack Kelly, John Anderson, Rodopho Acosta, Parley Baer, and Paul Fix, among others. It was also exceedingly good to see ‘Maverick’ Jack Kelly once again in a movie and he played the black hat to its fullest.

The location of filming will be apparent to most western buffs, Old Tucson, Kinney Road, Arizona. Down through the years how many westerns one wonders have been filmed in that location, probably equalled or exceeded only by Lone Pine, California.

Most reviews will allow only a couple stars for this movie, yet with everything working as smoothly as it does, plus the boatload of veteran actors, I give it 4 stars. Having several dozen books by Will Henry/Clay Fisher on the shelf, I enjoyed it very much, a movie to watch again. Almost as good as YELLOWSTONE KELLY, but not quite.

Semper Fi.

Richard Linklater is one of the great independent directors working today. No matter what you think of his work, you cannot deny that he is an original voice. I don’t like all his movies, but I invariably look forward to trying out each new one. Waking Life is one of the good ones.

To start with, its very existence is a sign of this man’s imagination. He films the whole thing and edits it into a feature. Now at this point, most directors would consider their film finished. But not Rick Linklater. No, now he gives it to Bob Sabiston at LineResearch to totally cover over with rotoscoping animation using Sabiston’s own software. So, basically, he’s made two films in one. And we’re the luckier for it.

If you’ve seen Slacker, you’ll be familiar with the style. In that film, one scene blends into another through the use a minor character from one scene (often no more than a walk-on) becoming the focus of the next scene. Well, here the blend is not so logical. Several scenes appear to be dreams from which our hero (played by Wiley Wiggins from Dazed and Confused) awakens at the end. Only even his awakening appears to be part of the dream. Eventually, he realizes that he is not really waking up, and this begins to disturb him. (How to tell when you’re dreaming–and make the most of it–becomes the subject of one conversation.) But he continues to meet up with people, often trying to interrupt their monologues with his own questions about his problem. Until he finally runs into a guy playing pinball (Linklater) who tells him simply to “wake up.”

But does he?

Animating this film was the best idea Linklater had. Often one’s mind wanders during these characters’ monologues (several of them just aren’t that interesting), but the animation surrounding them keeps your interest. It not only saves the film, but makes it better. It transcends itself. Instead of becoming Slacker meets My Dinner with Andre, it turns into art–that rarest of creatures, cinematic art.

Conversations that would be as dull as a dormitory-kitchen knife are enlivened. Concepts not understood become graspable through the use of illustrative drawings. Even the actors themselves (primarily amateurs including several professors from the University of Texas at Austin) are shown in a new light through the eyes of the animators. (One wonders what they thought of the animators’ taking license with their likenesses.) My favorites were the “human interaction” scene, the “holy moment” scene, the story told in the bark, and the above “pinball” scene, where Linklater tells the film’s most interesting story about Phillip K. Dick’s discovery after writing one of his novels.

Have your own “holy moment” and immerse yourself in the dream world of Waking Life.

(Note on the DVD: This baby is loaded. Making ofs, interviews, several commentaries, and a very compelling animated short film called “Snack and Drink” featuring an autistic boy. Very educational regarding the process of bringing this movie through its paces and very entertaining as well. Well worth the price.)

Richard Linklater calls this a “movie about ideas,” and it is indeed unlike most movies. It has only the slightest semblance of a plot. The unnamed narrator, played by Wiley Wiggins, seems to be trapped in a neverending dream in which he encounters a whole series of characters who expound on ideas about existence, dreaming, identity, time, religion, society. It reminded me of conversations with peers in college, sitting in the hallway of a dormitory, in the middle of the night, our minds bursting with ideas, grappling with problems and not finding any solutions but enamored with the quest. Like that, except amplified. The ideas in Waking Life are not like, whoa, you know, the ramblings of a pot-smoking college flunkie, but actual thoughts from intriguing street philosophers like Speed Levitch, fictional characters like Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s characters from Linklater’s Before Sunrise, artists like Steven Soderbergh, or academics like philosophy professor Robert Solomon.

It’s a movie that would not have worked nearly as well as live action. The realism would detract from the intellectual dreaminess of the ideas. Linklater’s animation technique, which uses computers to paint on top of live digital video footage, is just right for this film. It is as close as I’ve ever seen to having visuals actually embody the ideas being expressed verbally by the characters. A new, exciting alternative to the documentary as a visual medium for ideas, and just as credible an approach as that of, say, David Lynch, for reproducing the sensation of dream. The animation awakens the reality just as the ideas in the film rouse your mind.

Finally, it’s a movie that will inspire a polarized reaction. The person I saw the film with stood up halfway into the film and left, unable to stand it. The greatest films seem to inspire such reaction. I left the theater and stood on the sidewalk outside, thinking.

Sam and Jonah Baldwin, father and son, have lost the most important woman in their lives to cancer. Seeking to escape from the painful memories that lurk in every nook and cranny of Chicago, they move to Seattle. Eighteen months later, Jonah can sense that his dad is still sad; and, in desperation calls a nationally syndicated radio self-help guru on Christmas Eve to wish for his father a new wife. Annie Reed lives in Baltimore and is engaged to Walter. Their relationship, while loving and comfortable, is entirely devoid of romantic sparks. When Annie hears Jonah’s soulful plea on the radio, it’s as if her heart has been touched by “magic” and she is determined to find out why she feels so powerfully drawn to Sam and his son … even if it means traveling across “like 26 states”.

The critique …

Sleepless in Seattle is a brilliantly simple film; that’s what makes it so great. To quote Nora Ephron, “It isn’t a movie about love, it’s a movie about love in the movies.” To emphasize this point, she incorporates various parallel references to “An Affair to Remember” throughout the film; but, Sleepless is also a movie about our genuine romantic fantasies and sentimental ideals about falling in love (which, let’s admit it, have been undeniably shaped by what we’ve seen on the silver screen). The script is refreshingly candid, yet endearing and Nora Ephron’s direction is impeccable. Ross Malinger, cast as Jonah Baldwin, is the youngest and most notable talent in the film. He does an excellent job of portraying THE quintessential eight-year-old; he’s impulsive, moody and thinks he knows it all. (I speak from experience here folks; I currently have a son that age.) He and Tom Hanks come together flawlessly as father and son; so successfully in fact, that they would be utterly convincing off screen. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is equally amazing, which is no small achievement considering the fact that they rarely appear together in a scene. The supporting cast is brimming with talent and includes Rosie O’Donnell, Bill Pullman, Rita Wilson, Rob Reiner, David Hyde Pierce, and a young Gaby Hoffmann. Families with younger children will appreciate the film’s integrity; there is very little foul language (”God damn it” and ” … it scared the shit out of me …” being the worst of it) and no “sexual content” to be wary of. All around, this is a winning film. One that I find myself watching over and over and over again.

The DVD …

For a 10th Anniversary Edition, the special features are few and rather disappointing. You’ve got your basic director commentary, a music video (”When I Fall in Love” by Celine Dion & Clive Griffin), and a “Love in the Movies” Featurette. This last piece is approximately 15 minutes long. It features the director, producers, actors and the hosts of Loveline: Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla (why they are included, I don’t know) talking about “Love in the Movies.” There are some interesting interview segments with an Empire State Building Historian and some very beautiful shots of the New York skyline before 9/11; but there’s certainly nothing here to write home about. By far, the most exciting feature is that you can choose your aspect ratio. (And honestly, how exciting is that?) This a DVD that you buy for the film alone.

Some people have songs, my husband and I have a movie. We not only met in Seattle, my husband lived next to Lake Union, very close to where this movie was made. He actually saw them filming scenes from the movie.

You could say the roles were a bit reversed, being I was the one getting over a relationship and he was not really looking at the time. Having lived in Seattle for many years, I especially enjoyed seeing scenes from Pike Place Market and West Seattle.

Rosie O’Donnell adds to the wit with lines like: “You want to be in love in a movie.” Tom Hanks gives a sensitive performance as Sam who lost the love of his life. He and his son Jonah, live on Lake Union. Annie (Meg Ryan) is caught up with plans for her wedding. She is engaged and not looking for love. Yet, as it so often happens, love does appear when you are not looking.

One night Annie hears a radio show where Jonah has called in to ask how his father could find a new wife. The radio host invites Sam to reveal his heart and Annie literally cries when he says how his wife used to make everything in his life beautiful. She makes a connection and starts fantasizing about a man she has never met.

The songs are masterfully woven into the story and provides a feeling of old fashioned romance, where destiny draws two lovers to one another. There is also a sense of family and how everyone has needs and desires. Jonah especially wants a mother. Annie and Sam don’t really know what they want, but they do get what they need. I found that very true to life.

Wit, chemistry, laugh-out-loud humor and romance, romance, romance! Worth watching at least once a year during the holiday season!

Dreamy!
