The first of a popular series (six in all) starring the charismatic and athletically adept Jet Li. Li plays legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hong, a late 19th century southern Chinese healer and kung fu master. The story begins with Western powers (American, British, and French) encroaching on the city of Canton. Wong is asked by the Black Flag army to safeguard the town by creating his own militia of kung fu experts. His assistants include the butcher “Porky” (Kent Cheng), a Chinese-American named Bucktooth So (Jacky Cheung), and his westernized “Auntie” Yee (Rosamund Kwan), a non-blood-related childhood friend for whom he holds a special affection. But the Westerners aren’t the only problem in Canton. The Sha Ho gang terrorizes local businesses and has begun dealing with the Americans in exporting Chinese for slave labor and prostitution. A down-on-his-luck kung fu master named Iron Vest Yim (Yan Yee Kwan) has decided he needs to defeat Wong to open a school and Leung Fu (Jackie Chan contemporary Yun Biao), a traveling opera troupe groupie, just keeps getting in the way. This epic martial-arts film showcases Li’s amazing fighting and acrobatic skills and established Tsui Hark as a top-notch action film director. The final fight scene between Wong and Yim entails a dizzying orchestration of kicks and punches while teeter-tottering on ladders. The DVD features star bios, filmographies, trailers, and clips from early Wong Fei Hong films that starred veteran actor Kwan Tak Hing. –Shannon Gee

Although the first feature in this popular franchise is more serious in tone than Tenchi in Tokyo or Tenchi Muyo!, the characters prove strong enough to carry a longer story while remaining tru to their established personalities.
When the criminal Kain escapes from prison, he destroys Galactic Patrol Headquarters, then moves to Earth to strike the Masaki family, whose link to the royal family of Jurai engenders his hatred. Capable of moving through time as well as space, he plans to kill Tenchi’s mother, Achika, before she marries his father, Nobuyuki. If Kain were to succeed, Tenchi would cease to exist, the Masaki line would end, and his friends would disappear.
Scientific genius Washu transports Tenchi, Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, space pirate Ryoko, Galactic Patrol officers Mihoshi and Kiyone, and cabbit Ryo-Ohki back to 1970 to defend Achika. The inevitable wacky contretemps occur–Ayeka and Ryoko get into a fight that brings Tokyo’s commuter train system to a halt–and it’s interesting to see Nobuyuki as an uncertain architecture student, rather than a comic lecher. The final confrontation with Kain takes on an unusual poignancy from Tenchi’s feelings for the mother he never knew (she died while he was an infant).

This documentary, originally made for television, not only chronicles the making of the brilliant, controversial centennial production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle at Bayreuth; it also looks at the history of Bayreuth Ring productions and the history of the Wagner family, preserver and modifier of his performing tradition. It includes some recordings and film clips that will interest devotees of performance history and interviews with the artists behind the spectacular success (after early controversy) of the 1976 centennial production: director Patrice Chereau, conductor Pierre Boulez, and television director Brian Large.
Wagner’s widow, Cosima, took the role of keeper of the sacred flame, and preserved 19th-century performance practices into the 1930s, when they were hopelessly obsolete. The sacred flame was passed on to Winifred, wife of Wagner’s son Siegfried and a close friend of Adolf Hitler. He visited Bayreuth frequntly and is shown basking in the admiration of ecstatic throngs. After World War II, the next generation, Wolfgang and Wieland Wagner, began to experiment with avant-garde staging. Winifred hated the changes they introduced but concluded it was “better to be furious than to be bored.”
The 1976 production (filmed with the same performers in a 1980 revival) is the pinnacle of their experimentation. Chereau updated the action to Wagner’s lifetime and later, interpreting the cycle as a critiqu of the 19th century. Boulez lightened and clarified the orchestral texture so radically that the orchestra members formally protested. The result is a Ring cycle that many consider the best on home video; the alternative is a Metropolitan Opera production whose fidelity to Wagner’s original vision would have gladdened Cosima’s heart. –Joe McLellan

The best way to enjoy this 1997 thriller is to forget the much better film that inspired it (1973’s The Day of the Jackal) and get whatever kicks you can from this heavy-metal remake. It’s not bad as hokey thrillers go, but all of the original film’s suspenseful finesse has been traded in (not traded up) for bigger, bolder action and nonsensical plotting. It’s as if Hollywood had forgotten to create excitement without resorting to overblown action and heavy hardware, but there’s ample compensation in the casting of Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. Willis is the elusive assassin known only as the Jackal, whose latest target (he uses a cannon-sized gun that’s anything but inconspicuous) may be the first lady of the United States. Gere plays a former IRA terrorist who is recruited by the deputy head of the FBI (Sidney Poitier) to trace the Jackal’s maneuvers, and Diane Venora offers some gutsy support as a Russian-born agent who assists Gere on his mission. The movie has fun turning Willis into a master of disguise, and Gere adds much-needed gravity to counter the plot’s escalating absurdity, but this is the kind of film that falls apart if you think about it too much. –Jeff Shannon

A gung-ho and merciful angel (Buck Henry) pulls Joe Pendleton (Beatty), a football star, out of his body before his time, forcing the higher powers to come up with a substitute host. Joe settles on a vicious multimillionaire whose wife and partner are trying to kill him. Light, breezy, with not a mean bone in its body, Heaven is based on the 1941 film Here Comes Mr. Jordan. Beatty is wonderfully daft and innocent as Joe, Jack Warden is on top of his form as Joe’s trainer Corky, and Julie Christie appears to be playing a diaphanous summer dress. Great comic relief is provided by Dyan Cannon, Charles Grodin, and the notion that the 1978 Los Angeles Rams could go to the Superbowl. –Keith Simanton
