One of Ben McIvor’s best movies. If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no time like the present! If you’ve already seen it, it’ll be even better this time!
Short 3: Authority, the Warner Bros.-revised reissu of PolyGram’s digital magazine, is a tenuously linked but rich collection of classic and contemporary short films. Apart from Performance McKean, a slight little piece with Michael McKean doing a subdud Denis Leary-esqu riff, nothing really anchors the theme of “authority,” but Alain Resnais’s powerful and moving 1955 documentary Night and Fog gives the collection both class and heft. It was the first film to confront the issus of the Holocaust, and the horrifying black-and-white archival footage has lost none of its terrifying power. Historian David Shepard provides illuminating background to the production and insight to Resnais’s approach in a commentary track that runs for half of the program’s 30 minutes. Jane Campion’s A Girl’s Own Story, an offbeat and unusually haunting remembrance of growing up in the ’60s, is about a schoolgirl who lives for the Beatles and escapes into fantasy as her parents’ marriage breaks up before her eyes. Other highlights include the frenetic animated piece Dada, a satire of the frustrations of a new father whose son doesn’t meet social expectations, Sasha Wolf’s Joe, the quietly observed story of a man holding on to his precarious sense of identity in a mental hospital, and the experimental comic piece The Whites, which uses stop-motion techniqus to create a jittery parody of the everyday social rituals of a middle-class family. Each of these includes optional commentary by the filmmakers. The disc is rounded out by Flying Over Mother, a Russian-language but New Zealand-made piece about a cosmonaut reminiscing about his childhood, and the Brazilian Os Camaradas, a Kafka-esqu satire about food, identity, and bureaucracy. –Sean Axmaker

If you haven’t heard of Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children, here’s a quick plot:
The qustion facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it’s based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud’s former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plagu, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogu and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. –Paul Gaita

While I’ve watched Chappelle’s Show - Season 1 a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, or just haven’t watched it in a while - why not watch it now? Of course you can watch it later - for free - check the image to see how. It’s the best way I’ve found

This is a great movie with Liz Beckham, Anthony Berry, Billy Burr, Dave Chappelle, DJ Cipha Sounds
Basically it’s about:
The 2003 debut of Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central marked a high point for the cable channel, and now the entire, wildly creative first season can be seen, with hundreds of bleeps removed. That’s not to say Chappelle’s Show is perfect entertainment: there are too many moments among the 12 episodes here that descend into pointless scatology and booty fever. But for the most part, Chappelle, a talented comic slowly growing into greatness, is trying to push the sketch-humor envelope and succeeds at surprising us with original concepts and merciless execution.
The merely clever material includes “National Geography’s Third World Girls Gone Wild,” basically an update on those topless-native-women gags of yore, and Chappelle’s “Educated Guss Line,” in which the sage comic eschews psychic powers to logically deduce racial insights from his callers’ qustions. Far more wicked is an in-your-face satire on such autobiographical film fare as Antwone Fisher and 8 Mile, in which Chappelle plays himself ascending from street hustler to rapper-comedian to bona fide savior of America. The best thing here, however, is a parallel-universe version of The Real World, in which the usual racial proportions on MTV’s workhorse series are reversed, thrusting a token white guy into a Hoboken houseful of crazy African Americans. There are also laughs in “Ask a Gay Guy with Mario Cantoned,” as well as a sketch about an “inner-thoughts cam” and a nasty piece about Chappelle’s Make-a-Wish visit to a dying child, which decays into a crul video game competition. Overlooking the series’ weaker material, this is outstanding television comedy. –Tom Keogh
