Alfred Hitchcock’s 1936 drama, among his darkest, is the one to which he regretfully pointed later as the exception that proved his usual rule about good suspense: you have to let an audience know the precise danger that a character doesn’t know he imminently faces. Then you have to withdraw or cancel out the danger lest viewers feel betrayed. The “betrayal” in Sabotage rather famously involves a bomb, a boy, and a bus. But in the context of the story (based on Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent, inevitably confused with Hitchcock’s quite different film called Secret Agent), the twist has a devastating significance, ushering in the director’s pet themes about the proximity of chaos to ordinary life and the nature and transference of guilt. Sylvia Sidney stars as the naive American wife of a German spy, the latter using a movie theater as a cover for his terrorist activities. When he asks his wife’s young brother to make a delivery–a package containing a ticking bomb, unknown to the child–a bus delay causes the boy to die in the timed explosion. Sidney’s character murders her spouse in revenge, but as in Hitch’s great Blackmail, the deed is obscured by a sympathetic lawman who ultimately shares her secret. Wrong or right, right or wrong–the clear distinctions don’t often exist in the great director’s movies, and Sabotage is no exception. The print of the film used in the DVD release is serviceable and probably comparable to an average 16mm classroom or museum presentation. The DVD also includes a Hitchcock filmography, trivia qustions, a director biography, and scene access. –Tom Keogh

Life is settling into an almost normal routine for twin witches Camryn (Tamera Mowry) and Alex (Tia Mowry) following their heroic efforts to save the magical realm of Coventry from the evil warlock Thantos (Patrick Fabian) and the invading darkness in Twitches . The two sisters are learning to use and control their magical powers and getting used to living as one family while they explore collegiate life at Waverly University and get to know their real mother Miranda (Kristen Wilson). Unexpectedly, the darkness returns to threaten Coventry once again and this time it follows Camryn and Alex into the mortal world. Protectors Karsh (Pat Kelly) and Ileana (this time played by Leslie Seiler) interrupt their nuptial planning to bring the girls back to Coventry at Miranda’s command, but Camryn and Alex find themselves qustioning their mother’s decision to deprive her people of their magical powers as well as her insistence that the girls perform a spell to vanquish the darkness in two days time. Even more confusing is Alex’s inexplicable conviction that her father Aron (Kevin Jubinville) is alive and residing in the very Shadow lands her and Camryn are set to destroy. In the end, Camryn and Alex must find a way to collaboratively use their powers to preserve Coventry without sacrificing their own convictions. Like the first film, an alternate ending leaves viewers with a shred of doubt, opening the door for another sequl. Also included is a 6-minute behind the scenes featurette. In total confusion she strays into a nearby field and witnesses a murder… In a state of shock she runs to her car, which on starting, mysteriously transports her back into the 1980’s. On reporting the murder, investigations by the police find no trace of a body, but they do uncover records of a murder committed 40 years previously. The police dismiss Jackie’s report as pure imagination.

Basically it’s about:
The sexual revolution meets a bumbling door-to-door salesman and his beautician wife in the form of “educational” sex films in this satiric comedy, set in Spain in 1973. Alfredo Lopez (Javier Camara) is an encyclopedia salesman whose work has not been going especially well lately, which is worrisome to his wife, Carmen (Candela Pena), who is eager to have a baby. As it happens, encyclopedia sales have been dismal overall, and publisher Don Carlos (Juan Diego) strikes upon an idea for a more lucrative product line — an “audiovisual encyclopedia of human reproduction,” consisting of 8 mm movies demonstrating different ways for couples to make love. Don Carlos sets up a meeting between his sales staff and Dennis (Thomas Bo Larsen), a pornographer from Denmark who likes to tell people he once worked with Ingmar Bergman. While most of the salesmen refuse to have anything to do with Don Carlos’ new scheme — especially since pornography is strictly illegal under the Franco regime — Alfredo grudgingly goes along, and despite his misgivings Carmen is drafted to star in the first film in the series. As the films become an underground success in Spain and earns a more high-profile reputation in Denmark, Carmen is recognized in public as a glamorous porn star, and Alfredo deludes himself into believing he and Dennis are making art films. But Alfredo’s ambitions get the better of him when he begins writing a screenplay for a serious feature film and Carmen becomes increasingly obsessed with having a child. This award-winning Chinese film is unlike any other you’ve seen: a tru-life story that’s enacted by the real-life participants but is not a documentary in any traditional sense. Not only did the young actor Jia Hongsheng (who rose to stardom in China, succumbed to heroin addiction, and alienated his family with erratic, schizoid behavior) agree to re-create this harrowing period in his life, but so did his family, as well as everyone else who appears in Quitting. His recovery is as compelling as his collapse; the efforts of his family to support his return to health are deeply moving. Director Zhang Yang (Shower) shifts styles without losing the forward momentum of this remarkable chronicle. Quitting was a sensation in China, where the struggle between traditional conformity and individual freedom grows increasingly tense, making this movie a striking social document as well as a gripping personal story. –Bret Fetzer

Don’t know what it’s about?

Out of step with the public mood when it was released in 1968, Ice Station Zebra has held up decently as a Guy’s Movie. Based on an Alistair MacLean novel, the film is half submarine picture and half spy puzzler, short on action but long on military chatter and espionage gamesmanship. Rock Hudson, looking seasoned and just a little miffed, gives one of his better performances as the captain of a nuclear sub, ordered to the Arctic to check out a disturbance at a research station on the floating ice. He doesn’t know the mission, but he’s stuck with mysterious passengers: haughty British agent Patrick McGoohan, back-slapping Russian operative Ernest Borgnine, and hostile Marine captain Jim Brown. McGoohan gets the film’s best lines and finest fur jacket, but Brown is pretty cool in a smaller role.

John Sturges directs, with customary deliberateness; at times the movie seems to be suffering from iron-poor blood. Much of the dialogu is pretty sharp, especially in the submarine half, enough to keep you engrossed if you’re in the mood for this kind of thing. When the action shifts to the ice, the studio-bound sets inevitably take their toll. It’s not hard to see how this large, old-fashioned project misfired in the era of Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate, but the more tantalizing qustion is: Why did this movie become an obsessive favorite of Howard Hughes? Maybe he liked how clean it all looks. –Robert Horton
