Since Adolf Hitler had the audacity to borrow his mustache from the most famous celebrity in the world–Charlie Chaplin–it meant Hitler was fair game for Chaplin’s comedy. (Strangely, the two men were born within four days of each other.) The Great Dictator, conceived in the late thirties but not released until 1940, when Hitler’s war was raging across Europe, is the film that skewered the tyrant. Chaplin plays both Adenoid Hynkel, the power-mad ruler of Tomania, and a humble Jewish barber suffering under the dictator’s rule. Paulette Goddard, Chaplin’s wife at the time, plays the barber’s beloved; and the rotund comedian Jack Oakie turns in a weirdly accurate burlesqu of Mussolini, as a bellowing fellow dictator named Benzino Napaloni, Dictator of Bacteria. Chaplin himself hits one of his highest moments in the amazing sequnce where he performs a dance of love with a large inflated globe of the world. Never has the hunger for world domination been more rhapsodically expressed. The slapstick is swift and sharp, but it was not enough for Chaplin. He ends the film with the barber’s six-minute speech calling for peace and prophesying a hopeful future for troubled mankind. Some critics have always felt the monologu was out of place, but the lyricism and sheer humanity of it are still stirring. This was the last appearance of Chaplin’s Little Tramp character, and not coincidentally it was his first all-talking picture. –Robert Horton

and here’s the plot:
After threatening audiences with The Amazing Colossal Man, director-producer-special-effects “whiz” Bert I. Gordon again proves that size does matter in his revamp of The Incredible Shrinking Man for American International Pictures. John Hoyt, the wheelchair-bound tycoon from When Worlds Collide, is Mr. Franz, a lonely doll maker who reduces anyone who abandons him to doll-size. How Franz, a former puppeteer, could accomplish this scientific marvel is never explained, but Franz’s collection (who, in an oddly unsettling scene, are forced to participate in a marionette show) include his salesman Bob (John Agar, by now an established B-movie staple) and secretary (June Kenny, from Gordon’s Earth vs. the Spider) as well as a handful of strangers (including Ken Miller from I Was a Teenage Werewolf and the QUn of Outer Space herself, Laurie Mitchell). As always, Gordon’s limitations overshadow his intentions, and his direction and atrocious effects (AIP monster maker Paul Blaisdell is credited with “special design”), as well as the script by SF hack George Worthing Yates (Them!), undo the film’s few laudable aspects, chief among them Hoyt’s sympathetic performance. However, his self-promotional skills are topnotch–Bob and Sally see Colossal Man on their drive-in date. Puppet People won’t impress younger audiences, but parents raised on a diet of drive-in fodder will appreciate its pulpy plot and solid genre cast. Filmed as The Fantastic Puppet People, it was retitled after being paired on a double bill with War of the Colossal Beast. MGM’s full-screen print looks excellent, with only mild speckling. –Paul Gaita

The line between parody and tribute can be hard to draw, but any marginally hip baby boomer who ever watched Jack Webb’s straight-laced Detective Joe Friday caught a glimmer of the comedic vein waiting to be mined beneath Dragnet’s gritty Los Angeles streets. In 1987 moviegoers had yet to be crushed under the weight of the 1990s TV remake mania, and Dragnet comes off as fresh and funny. Dan Aykroyd plays Joe Friday, the straight-arrow nephew of Webb’s iconic cop. This part was made for him (in fact, he’s given top writing credit), and under his steely exterior you can tell he’s having a ball delivering those rapid-fire recitations of regulations and deadpan expressions of moral outrage. Tom Hanks plays Pep Streebek, the laissez-faire narco agent who is Friday’s new partner. Their assignment: bust the Pagans, a wild-and-woolly gang of dope fiends, deadbeats, and beatniks behind a bewildering array of bizarre robberies. Hilarity ensus. Friday and Streebek outfox a corrupt televangelist (Christopher Plummer), bicker over chili dogs and cigarettes, alternately revile and fawn over a porn millionaire (Dabney Coleman), wrestle a 30-foot-long anaconda, and rescu the virgin Connie Swail–the only girl capable of stealing Friday’s heart. –Grant Balfour

Starship Troopers
In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire–not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cus from Robert Heinlein’s classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called “Melrose Place in Space,” with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they’ve been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequnces (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien “bugs” bent on planetary conqust. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein’s underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It’s an action-packed joy ride if that’s all you’re looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting.

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation
Allowing for all the low-budget shortcomings that plagu any straight-to-video production, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation serves up 92 minutes of passable sci-fi action. Parlaying his veteran status as an animator, special-effects wizard, and stalwart survivor of the CGI revolution, Phil Tippett (with returning screenwriter Ed Neumeier) makes a woefully uninspired directorial debut with this makeshift sequl to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 blockbuster, retaining the jarhead militarism of Robert Heinlein’s original novel while serving up more bugs, an all-new cast of attractive young stars, and all-too-familiar plot elements borrowed from a dozen better movies. “Bigger is better” is out of the qustion under such meager budgetary circumstances, so Tippett and Neumeier compensate with grusome bugfights and gross-out effects at regular intervals, some standard-issu nudity, and escalating paranoia (echoing Carpenter’s The Thing) when a new breed of bugs use human hosts (a la The Hidden) to overtake a stranded platoon of Federation soldiers on a bug-infested planet. Relying on murky confinement to hide nondescript sets, Troopers 2 has three engaging leads in its favor: TV regular Richard Burgi is solidly cast as the titular hero (he’s the military equivalent of Pitch Black’s Riddick); Colleen Porch is engaging as the most sensible Federation survivor; and screen veteran Ed Lauter makes the most of his salty role as a battle-hardened general. Unfortunately, they’re adrift in a knock-off sequl (shot on high-def digital video) that could never do justice to its energetic predecessor. –Jeff Shannon

While I’ve watched Starship Troopers / Starship Troopers 2 - Hero Of The Federation a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites.
