The line between parody and tribute can be hard to draw, but any marginally hip baby boomer who ever watched Jack Webb’s straight-laced Detective Joe Friday caught a glimmer of the comedic vein waiting to be mined beneath Dragnet’s gritty Los Angeles streets. In 1987 moviegoers had yet to be crushed under the weight of the 1990s TV remake mania, and Dragnet comes off as fresh and funny. Dan Aykroyd plays Joe Friday, the straight-arrow nephew of Webb’s iconic cop. This part was made for him (in fact, he’s given top writing credit), and under his steely exterior you can tell he’s having a ball delivering those rapid-fire recitations of regulations and deadpan expressions of moral outrage. Tom Hanks plays Pep Streebek, the laissez-faire narco agent who is Friday’s new partner. Their assignment: bust the Pagans, a wild-and-woolly gang of dope fiends, deadbeats, and beatniks behind a bewildering array of bizarre robberies. Hilarity ensus. Friday and Streebek outfox a corrupt televangelist (Christopher Plummer), bicker over chili dogs and cigarettes, alternately revile and fawn over a porn millionaire (Dabney Coleman), wrestle a 30-foot-long anaconda, and rescu the virgin Connie Swail–the only girl capable of stealing Friday’s heart. –Grant Balfour

Starship Troopers
In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire–not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cus from Robert Heinlein’s classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called “Melrose Place in Space,” with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they’ve been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequnces (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien “bugs” bent on planetary conqust. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein’s underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It’s an action-packed joy ride if that’s all you’re looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting.

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation
Allowing for all the low-budget shortcomings that plagu any straight-to-video production, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation serves up 92 minutes of passable sci-fi action. Parlaying his veteran status as an animator, special-effects wizard, and stalwart survivor of the CGI revolution, Phil Tippett (with returning screenwriter Ed Neumeier) makes a woefully uninspired directorial debut with this makeshift sequl to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 blockbuster, retaining the jarhead militarism of Robert Heinlein’s original novel while serving up more bugs, an all-new cast of attractive young stars, and all-too-familiar plot elements borrowed from a dozen better movies. “Bigger is better” is out of the qustion under such meager budgetary circumstances, so Tippett and Neumeier compensate with grusome bugfights and gross-out effects at regular intervals, some standard-issu nudity, and escalating paranoia (echoing Carpenter’s The Thing) when a new breed of bugs use human hosts (a la The Hidden) to overtake a stranded platoon of Federation soldiers on a bug-infested planet. Relying on murky confinement to hide nondescript sets, Troopers 2 has three engaging leads in its favor: TV regular Richard Burgi is solidly cast as the titular hero (he’s the military equivalent of Pitch Black’s Riddick); Colleen Porch is engaging as the most sensible Federation survivor; and screen veteran Ed Lauter makes the most of his salty role as a battle-hardened general. Unfortunately, they’re adrift in a knock-off sequl (shot on high-def digital video) that could never do justice to its energetic predecessor. –Jeff Shannon

While I’ve watched Starship Troopers / Starship Troopers 2 - Hero Of The Federation a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. This is the best production ever of Aikido masters demonstrating ever put together in one tape. You will see the master himself demonstrate and then you will see his seniors all performing at their very best some in color some in B/W.

Names like Gozo Shioda, Koichi Tohei, Kisshomaru ushiba, Morihiro Saito, Master ushiba and several more of Aikido’s top masters all show you there skills.

Some of the footage is in full color while others of it dates back to the 1930’s so it is in B/W but it to is in very high quality.

You will see body techniqus, sword techniqus defence and Offensive, Tanto defence, jo offense and defence techniqus one on one and multiple attackers plus just so much more it is incredible.

Much of this footage was lost until very recently and has never been available until mid 2004 so it has most likely not been seen before.

These are the men who Aikido owes its creation to.

One of the greatest scandals in American corporate history is chronicled in the riveting documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. Based on the bestselling book by Fortune magazine reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkin, and directed by Alex Gibney (who also produced The Trials of Henry Kissinger), the film is an epic morality tale, drawing upon a wealth of insider interviews and archival material to show how Enron, once the nation’s seventh largest corporate entity, essentially faked its bookkeeping to report profits that never existed. The corrupt and closely-guarded mismanagement by Enron executives (including Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, later placed on criminal trial) is revealed through such heinous concepts as “Hypothetical Future Valu” (a way of reaping fortunes based on false profit projections) and the use of offshore “shell” companies to hide the massive losses that eventually toppled the company (along with the venerable Arthur Anderson accounting firm) and left 20,000 employees jobless. One of Graham Cull’s best movies. If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no time like the present! If you’ve already seen it, it’ll be even better this time!

Not even highbrow TV can resist spinning off a successful series! When the enormously popular Upstairs, Downstairs came to a close, two of its most colorful characters were given a series of their own: Thomas the chauffer (John Alderton, Calendar Girls) and Sarah the parlor maid (Pauline Collins, Shirley Valentine). Thomas & Sarah charted the social and financial escapades of this dubious pair, who lived together without getting married and were as comfortable with con artistry as lawful employment. The tone and quality of these 13 episodes varies from social commentary to light adventure, but at its best Thomas & Sarah could match its illustrious forebear.

The first episode starts things off on a smart, satirical note: Thomas disturbs Sarah’s carefully fabricated new identity when, to woo her back into his arms, he concocts a new persona of his own. But it’s a handful of later episodes that are truly remarkable. In one, Sarah tells Thomas that she’s pregnant to forestall his dream of emigrating to America. When he learns that she’s lied to him, he enacts a vicious revenge; Alderton’s performance is both convincing and frightening. In another, success in the stock market leads Thomas and Sarah to hire servants of their own–with decidedly uncomfortable results (Nigel Hawthorne, The Madness of King George, appears as a stern and rigid butler). The exploration of class is clever, subtle, and insightful. A second season was never produced du to a strike, but this single season remains a fascinating portrait of the Edwardian era, sparkling with superb acting and writing. Collins and Alderton create two engaging, contradictory, and utterly vivid characters, worthy of your time. –Bret Fetzer
