Look up the word `cool’ in any dictionary and it says “see Cowboy Bebop”…well, not really…but it should, because Cowboy Bebop is the quintessence of coolness. If you don’t already know, Bebop is a stylish 26-session masterpiece chronicling the thrilling triumphs and tribulations of those space-sailing, chain-smoking, bounty-hunting buddies, Jet Black and Spike Spiegel. Jet is a bald and burly bonsai tree collector with an artificial left arm and a comma-shaped piece of metal under his scarred right eye. A former ISSP officer–known on his home satellite, Ganymede, as the tenacious “Black Dog”–Jet is now the owner/pilot/mechanic of the spaceship Bebop. The wiry gunfighter and martial arts master, Spike, has fuzzy green hair, mismatched eyes and a checkered past. These two intrepid space “cowboys” hop from one astral gate to another to hunt down wanted criminals all across the galaxy, hoping to earn enough woolongs to enable Jet to finally add some actual beef to his famous “Bell Peppers and Beef” stir-fry. In Session 2, Spike and Jet rescue a Welsh Corgi “data-dog” named Ein from the notorious pet thief, Abdul Hakim. In Session 3, they meet up with an unscrupulous Blackjack dealer who turns out to be the infamous yellow-clad femme fatale, Faye Valentine. And in Session 9, they meet an androgynous red-headed net-diver with an occasionally invisible nose who calls herself Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky, IV. Only by working together can this motley little crew of hungry hunters overcome the ruthless gangsters, senile chess players, broken showers, biting mutants and bad mushrooms that stand in their way as they attempt to nab the endless lineup of bad guys profiled daily on Punch and Judy’s Big Shot television show.

Cowboy Bebop showcases phenomenal jazz music and exquisitely detailed animation that perfectly captures the mean streets and spaceways of a future world that’s simultaneously strange and familiar, with technology that’s grungy and realistic (like the hardware of the original Star Wars trilogy) and a uniquely multi-cultural cornucopia of characters. Unlike most animes, Bebop is primarily episodic, so the shows can be enjoyed individually, without requiring the viewer to watch the entire series in one sitting. My personal favorite is the suspense-filled horror spoof, “Toys In the Attic,” which opens with red-tinged video footage of a dingy tunnel, reminiscent of the long-forgotten Sega CD game, Sewer Shark.

The “Remix” of Cowboy Bebop allows you to hear the unforgettably exhilarating opening theme, Tank! (as well as the rest of the exquisitely-scored soundtrack), in speaker-rattling Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. This affordably-priced Anime Legends set collects the entire Bebop series (not the movie) on six colorfully silk-screened DVDs. A plethora of special features are included, among them: three English-language trailers for Cowboy Bebop on DVD; four Cartoon Network promos; interviews with Wendee Lee, the voice of Faye Valentine and Cartoon Network producer, Sean Akins; subtitled commentary on Session 1 with the Japanese voices of Spike and Jet, Koichi Yamadera and Unshou Ishizuka; commentary on Session 5 and 10 with Wendee Lee and ADR producer, Yutaka Maseba; a laughter-filled commentary on Session 17 with director, Shinichiro Watanabe, and legendary composer, Yoko Kanno; Session 24 commentary with the Japanese Faye, Megumi Hayashibara, and the Japanese Ed, Aoi Tada; a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Cowboy Bebop, called Session 0; plus a music video featuring the full-length version of Tank! Audio options consist of the aforementioned Dolby Digital 5.1 mix in both English and Japanese, as well as the original English and Japanese Stereo tracks. The ONLY downside to this release is that all six discs are awkwardly crowded into one plastic keepcase, each held in place with tiny tabs that are easily broken. Shucks howdy, this is an anime collection that would even satisfy those crotchety old geezers, Antonio, Carlos, and Jobim. So come out of your cryogenic sleep and order yours today! Highly recommended to all animation fans, cop show fans, jazz enthusiasts and corgi owners. “Once the channel is set, you will no longer be able to escape!”

Instead of giving some hack review of the story, I’ll skip it and assume you either know the story already or know how to google for it.

This box set of a solid anime is finally released in its newest form (improved and cleaned-up picture and 5.1 surround mix) at a very affordable price. Honestly, $40 is a steal considering what you had to pay for all of the discs individually. All 6 discs are in a clamshell case, similar to that of the Back to the Future. No insert inside, just the DVDs.

What I think of the improved picture:

It’s not bad. Not perfect but not bad. You’ll notice the picture is cleaned up a lot if you compare it with pre-improved releases. Scenes that are brighter or more colorful really come through. But I did notice something that kinda bothered me some. Scenes where there is a lot of black (which are many; the story is mostly in space. who knew?) seem off. What I mean by that is, the black areas aren’t a consistent black. This could be a result of the clean-up process but I’m not sure. Either way, it’s slightly distracting but by no means a deal breaker. (EDIT: This was an issue I experienced on the first disc and not later ones; not sure if it was with the disc or my TV’s brightness setting. Either way, not a big problem.) You’re getting a better copy of the show visually.

What I think of the sound:

Ok, if you know anything about Bebop, it’s that there is a great soundtrack. Snappy jazz with the opening credits and sad blues penetrate this series. Needless to say, with a diverse score like this one, the surround mix really pays off. Surround effects and bass response are dead on and not overwhelming. Scenes take advantage of the surrounds to create a balanced ambiance and you might even glance behind your shoulder at times. Don’t feel dumb if you do; I did it too. Gunfights and action scenes take good advantage of the subwoofer. But nothing overwhelming, it’s well balanced and just gives that extra punch you’d expect.

So what should you do?

If you don’t have this series, this is probably the best offer you’re going to get. If you laid down the money for each remastered disc, nothing is added for you content wise, other than your anger for Bandai not releasing this sooner.

A quality series with an upped picture quality and surround mix, offered at a reasonable price. Til next time Cowboy.

I’ve just examined some of the fullsize screenshots over at AVS and this ‘blu-ray’ looks terrible.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gladiator! Click Here

It uses DNR and EE throughout.

DNR - In 2008, a lot of studios were using this process. Basically, it digitally ’smudges’ the image to hide any evidence of film-grain and, predictably, blu-rays with DNR look like s–t. Most studios have stopped using DNR. But Paramount, apparently, is continuing to release this smudgy garbage and trying to pass it off as ‘high definition’

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gladiator! Click Here

(If you want the DNR experience at home; you can get the same effect by smearing vaseline all over your TV set. Yes, that’s about what it looks like)

EE - Edge Enhancement; in DVD days, when everyone was watching on tiny televisions, studios would use EE which basically messes with the colors a bit and adds bright white halos all around the edges (’enhances’ them) That might have made sense on a 10″ screen, but on a decent sized television it looks terrible.

There should be a proper release of this soon. Wait for that.

This review refers to the blu-ray picture quality only. The movie itself is an absolute classic. Unfortunately this blu-ray was a victim of considerable DNR and EE that has actually removed and distorted picture detail. Here’s a good example. At the beginning of the movie where we see Maximus as a General leading a final battle, you see an amazing wide shot of flying, flaming, arrows. It should look amazing, right? Wrong. The picture was DNR’d so badly that it actually removed arrows and the ones you can see are a blurred mess! Absolutely terrible. Don’t waste your money on this. Wait until they release a quality blu-ray because “this is not it!”

The General is one of a handful of movies that I can’t recommend more highly.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The General (1926)! Click Here

Some great old movies are a little bit like spinach. They’re good for you, so you HAVE to watch them, even though you’d really rather not.

This movie’s not like that. You start watching dutifully, and within five minutes or so you’ve forgotten that it’s a silent movie. It’s an adventure story full of narrow escapes, and a war movie with Civil War battle sequences that remain some of the most authentic ever filmed to this day. During the locomotive chase, I’m continually tempted to shout advice to the characters on the screen. (Okay, you probably don’t want to watch a movie with me.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream The General (1926)! Click Here

The General is a comedy throughout, but the laughs don’t detract a bit from the adventure. There are long tracking shots that would make Steven Spielberg jealous. There are no computer-generated special effects, but there are stunts that still make audiences gasp — including one you’re not likely ever to forget.

Several years ago, Kino Video released this on DVD as part of the Art of Buster Keaton collection, with a musical score by Robert Israel. I’ve held onto a 20-year-old laser disc version from Thames Television because I prefer that version’s score by Carl Davis. It appears that this blu-ray edition will offer both scores, plus a theatre organ score by Lee Erwin.

(I write this review without yet having seen the actual blu-ray disc. It’s the great, great movie itself that I want to recommend.)

you should change your description of The General. Johnny Grey (buster) is NOT ‘rejected as unfit’ in this movie. They don’t let him into the confederate army because they think he is more valuable to the South as an Engineer.

BIG difference. Don’t bust on Buster.

I remember way back when watching Crest of the Stars for the first time, feeling somewhat bored as the lengthy narration and, explanations of technology, and setup of the complex politics took place whilst the main characters were introduced and then slowly developed. Of course Crest of the Stars is an amazing piece of work once you get into it, and only gets better with each viewing. What once seemed to be boring now is thought-provoking, and characters reveal more depth to me the more I try to understand them. The second series, Banner of the Stars, was an almost entirely different animal. Instead of the slow pacing of the original, it had loads of great dialog among key players, and so many battles that I felt completely exhausted by the end. This series is the last of the trilogy, and I was starting to wonder how the series was going to end by the time I finally got around to watching it. I needn’t have worried.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Banner of the Stars II - Complete Collection! Click Here

Now that we have come to understand Abh thinking, Abh politics, and Abh life, you could say that the story is really kicking into high gear as far as the two lead characters are concerned. While in the first series Lafiel and Jinto were teenagers who thought more like kids, and in the second they were more like teenagers trying to act like adults, they are now at the point where they are, and act like, adults. Jinto is no longer uncomfortable when people refer to him as count Hyde, and Lafiel is no longer so self-conscious and over-doing it in her efforts to live up to her family’s name. Now count Hyde is becoming something of a skilled diplomat, and Lafiel has gained the confidence she needs to become an excellent captain. They aren’t kids helping each other out of dangerous situations or teens learning to trust each other. Now they are old friends who know each other quite well…and maybe more.

For this series, it seems like an extra coat of polish was applied to everything. The new remixed themes of some of the scores are simply magnificent, the visuals take a significant jump forward in quality over the second series (and everything is in widescreen to boot), and the dialog, camera angles, and overall feel of the show is much tighter this time around. We don’t need any lengthy explanations of Abh technology anymore, and as a result we are free to learn more about the Abh code of honor and ethics, and how sometimes that code requires making incredible sacrifices.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Banner of the Stars II - Complete Collection! Click Here

The overall story revolves around how Lafiel and Jinto find themselves negotiating with the government of a recently conquered territory, only to find out that it is a prison planet on the brink of civil war. As the enemy approaches, Jinto and Lafiel both have to take a stand for what they believe to be right and for me the best character defining moments of the trilogy are all in this series.

While there are fewer episodes in this series than in the previous two (which may contribute to the tight feeling and lack of filler episodes), but this is made up for by the bonus episode “Birth”, which deals with Lafiel’s parents, and how she was born. The end of Banner of the Stars II is highly satisfying, as things truly have come full circle for the two lead characters, a chapter of their life is ending, and another is beginning. For fans of the previous two Stars series, this is required viewing.

I have seen many shows in the past but about this one, I have to admit that it is truly an amazing show. I will avoid writing down all the names and terms that occur during the shows so that to avoid causing any “headaches” to the reader.

The story basically evolves through a galactic war among an elf-look-alike nation, called the Abhs, and humanity. Thing is that the first ones are human beings as well; they just altered their DNA and became something like a supreme human race. Moreover, they are conquering the galaxy and as it becomes obvious let us say, the “primitive” kind of humanity resists.

Apart from it, the amazing thing is that the story evolves around Lafiel and Jinto, the first is the daughter of an aristocrat and a princess at the same time, of the Abhs, and the second one is a human and a noble man among the ranks of the Abhs. May sound confusing, but in the series it will become apparent that some human nations have also formed alliances with the Abhs and fight side by side with them.

Having watched the complete shows, meaning all the episodes from “Crest of the Stars” up to “Banner of the Starts II”, the viewer will definitely get hooked up with the show. As the episodes go on, the more attached he or she will become with the main protagonists, especially with the relationship between Lafiel and Jinto, that starts as a strong friendship and evolves to a… . Furthermore, the protagonists are caught up in the mists of war and have to do anything possible not just to stay alive but also to protect each other… As for the ending, it surely answers all the questions that me be in the viewers mind and has a satisfying ending.

All this been said, I will definitely suggest the show. But if you truly want to watch the show, than you must see it from the beginning, meaning to the “Crest of the Stars”, then “Banner of the Starts I” and lastly, “Banner of the Starts II”. The only sad thing is that in the end you will want more of these shows but I do not know if there will be anything new “out there”.

The only thing left to say is: Enjoy them…

Cowboy doll Woody is Andy’s favorite toy, and as part of that comes the privilege of being the leader of all the other toys. His world is suddenly turned upside down when Andy gets a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday. Suddenly, Woody finds himself in danger of being replaced as Andy and all the toys flock to Buzz. Worse yet, Buzz doesn’t know he’s a toy. He thinks he’s the real Buzz Lightyear. But when the two toys get lost a couple days before Andy moves, they’ll have to work together to get home. Can Woody work with Buzz when they don’t have the same goal?

I can’t believe it’s been ten years since this movie came out. It’s had an immeasurable impact on the animation field and movies in general. At the same time, its flaws are evident. The humans look as plastic as the toys, and the fur on the dog is laughable. Computers have come a long way in ten years.

Whether this movie was any good or not, it would have been an important milestone. Fortunately, it succeeds on an entertainment level as well. The story is masterfully told revealing plot points and character equally. The movie is extremely funny as well; with lots of jokes for the adults in the audience and some classic lines I quote all the time. Plus it introduces us to a Pixar staple, the climax that will not quit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Toy Story! Click Here

Pixar has released great DVD’s from the start, and this two-disc set is no different. The movie is transferred directly from the digital files, so the picture is perfect. Sound is wonderful in two separate 5.1 surround tracks. Many of these extras are from the Ultimate Toy Box release of a few years ago, and they are well worth having. The commentary is very informative. The deleted scenes are interesting, but it’s obvious why they were deleted. The new features looking back at the movie from ten years later are wonderful as well.

This is a ground breaking movie that is just as much fun to watch as it is historic. I hadn’t watched it in quite some time and was reminded just how fun it is. I’ve got to watch it more often.

10 years. 20 years. It will be 50 years and this movie won’t get old. It doesn’t matter that animation is 100 times more detailed and cooler today than it was in 1995, when the movie first came out. The strength of this movie is in the story. There is so much territory to explore on this flic, and you have so much fun while you watch it, that you will never grow tired of it. And, with a 2.5-year old who loves to see Woody once and again, I can tell you it really doesn’t get old, no matter how many times you watch it!

The second disc does a superb job of accompanying the Pixar classic, going into the legendary details that have made Pixar’s DVDs famous. There is plenty to sink your teeth into, for the die-hard fans and those who are simply a bit curious alike. The entire package is a movie for all ages, for the ages. Get it and enjoy it once and again. The truth is you can never go wrong with Woody and Buzz Lightyear!

First off, what is with the selection screens? I have to adjust my television just to read the options! Anyway, several episodes here are up to the high standards of previous Family Guy seasons. My favorites are “PTV,” “The Fat Guy Strangler,” “Father, Son, and the Holy Fonz,” and “You May Now Kiss…” (Jasper is funny). Others, however, I found to be mediocre or just plain bad (”Patriot Games”). There are not as many episodes I want to see over and over as there are on volumes 1-3, but this season is still good enough for 4 stars. There are a lot of extras on disc 3, too. 44 deleted scenes and you can select all and have them play one after the other (some of these jokes are better than the ones that got left in the shows). The featurettes are very interesting where many of the directors and artists are interviewed on what all is entailed in putting a show together. Also, these episodes are uncensored (there is an F-Bomb dropped or two) but there is a censored option (isn’t it usually the other way around?). Anyway, here are the episodes:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Family Guy, Vol. 4! Click Here

Disc 1

“PTV”: A wardrobe malfunction involving David Hyde Pierce at the Emmys causes the FCC to censor all tv–”The `bleep’ Van `bleep’ Show, Starring `bleep’ Van `bleep.’ So Peter starts his own network featuring such highbrow programs as “The Side-Boob Hour” and “Dogs Humping.”

“Brian Goes Back to College”: The New Yorker magazine is interested in Brian as a contributor but requires a college degree. Brian had dropped out of Brown University. It’s strange to think of an animated dog in this way, but I’d always thought Brian was so cool and together. Hearing him lament about how he never finishes anything put a new spin on his character.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Family Guy, Vol. 4! Click Here

“The Courtship of Stewie’s Father”: Chris works for that disgusting old man who likes young boys while Stewie and Peter bond over something they both enjoy immensely: terrorizing Lois. This episode almost makes one sympathize with that old pediaphile (well, almost).

“The Fat Guy Strangler”: My favorite of this volume. Lois finds out she has a brother who went crazy after seeing their mother having relations with Jackie Gleason (hence his hatred of fat men). Meanwhile, Peter makes the shocking discovery that he is fat and starts the NAAFP.

“The Father, the Son and the Holy Fonz”: Peter’s father baptizes Stewie with tainted holy water and he has to be quarantined in a plastic bubble. Meanwhile, Peter starts the church of the Fonz–”Please rise…..Now sit on it.”

Disc 2:

“Brian Sings and Swings”: A near-death experience causes Brian to feel he must live for the moment so he hooks up with Frank Sinatra Jr. as part of the New Rat Pack. A funnier side story is Meg pretending to be a lesbian to be accepted into a club.

“Patriot Games”: This has to be the most stupidest Family Guy ever. Peter meets Tom Brady and joins the New England Patriots (along side Diet Pepsi machine?) but is transferred to a London team for showboating. Meanwhile, Brian fails to pay a debt and Stewie gives him a beat-down mob-style.

“I Take Thee Quagmire”: Quagmire gets married and soon realizes it was a mistake. Meanwhile, Lois is weaning Stewie but he finds he is addicted to breast milk.

“Sibling Rivalry”: Peter donates to a sperm bank and Stewie’s rival baby is born (remember “Emission Impossible”?). Meanwhile, Peter stops having relations with Lois after his vasectomy and Lois gets fat. I like that part. Another highlight: Chris’s shoebox diarrhea of the evolution of man.

“Deep Throats”: After getting what he deemed to be an excessively high parking ticket, Brian wants to find dirt on Mayor West and sees him dating his young intern: Meg.

Disc 3

“Peterotica”: First off, that Quagmire stuff in the beginning is very annoying. Anyway, Peter writes erotic novels and uses Lois’s father’s name as the publishing company. When someone gets into a car accident listening to Peter’s book on tape (read by Betty White), Mr. Pewterschmidt loses everything and must move in with the Griffins.

“You May Now Kiss the…Uh…Guy Who Receives”: (You get it? Hahaha). Brian’s gay cousin Jasper plans on marrying his partner but Brian first must fight Mayor Wests’ ban on gay marriage.

“Petergeist”: Peter digs in the yard and finds an Indian skull and weird things start to happen. Part of the plot is similar to that Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors where a 3D Homer is stuck in another dimension.

“The Griffin Family History”: The Griffins are stuck in a panic room while their house is being robbed so Peter tells them stories of his ancestors Nate the slave, Willie “Black-Eyed” Griffin the silent comedy star, and Peter H*tler who was the brother of…yeah.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of this collection since the end of the 3rd volume. But instead of boring you with all my details here it is, my review.

I received this edition for Christmas, actually, I received the Target Collector’s Edition. With this edition (along with the DVD’s) comes a book of Artist Series Postcards containing pictures of Peter, Quagmire, 2 of Brian, 2 of Stewie, a postcard of Peter and Brian, and a postcard featuring Meg. This edition also comes with 3 storyboard cards, one from each of the 3 previously released volumes (”If I’m Dyin’ I’m Lyin’” from Volume 1; “Lethal Weapons” from Volume 2, and “North by North Quahog” from Volume 3).

The edition also contains the uncernsored tracks to five of the episodes, though there isn’t really much difference in adding those tracks in my opinion. Was a little surprised to hear the F-word a couple of times, but that was all.

The episodes contained on this volume are…

Disc 1:

PTV: Television has been heavily censored by the FCC, Peter takes action by performing his own “as nature intended” channel. This leads the FCC to take more drastic action censoring the people of Quahog themselves.

Brian Goes Back to College: After being snubbed by the staff of The New Yorker for not graduating, Brian returns to college to get his degree. All the while, Peter, Joe, Cleveland, and Quagmire, form the “new” A-Team.

The Courtship of Stewie’s Father: Chris breaks one of old man Herbert’s windows and must do chores in order to pay back his debt. Stewie and Peter start hanging out with each other doing their most favorite activity, tormenting Lois.

The Fat Guy Strangler: Lois finds out that she has a long lost brother living in an insane asylum, but is haunted by his troubled past. Peter creates the NAAFP (Natinal Association for the Advancement of Fat People).

The Father The Son, and The Holy Fonz: Peter’s devout Catholic father returns for a visit and Peter decides to create his own religion for worshippers of “The Fonz”.

Disc 2:

Brian Sings and Swings: Following a car accident, Briand falls into a deep depression, but is quickly brought out of it by meeting and singing with Frank Sinatra Jr in a local nightclub.

Patriot Games: During his 25-year high school reunion, Peter meets Patriots QB Tom Brady who recruits Peter for the team because of his runing skills.

I Take Thee Quagmire: After Peter wins a week of free maid service on a game show, Quagmire falls in love for the maid, and they soon plan to wed. Until Quagmire, learns about that his bride to be is a few fries short of a happy meal.

Sibling Rivalry: Nine months after a mishap at the sperm bank, Stewie’s half brother Bertram is born to a lesbian couple and the two battle it out for world domination.

Deep Throats: After Meg lands an internship in the Mayor’s Office, Brian and Stewie go undercover in an attempt to expose Mayor West.

Disc 3:

Peterotica: Peter becomes a best selling novelist for erotica, but ruins his father-in-law after a book of Peter’s is published on tape resulting in a big lawsuit.

You May Now Kiss The …Uh…Guy Who Receives: Brian’s gay cousin comes to visit the family, bringing his fiance along with him. After the two decide to marry, a same-sex marriage ban is proposed as Brian works ferersihly to reverse Mayor’s West decision.

Petergeist: Peter disturbs an ancient burial site in an attempt to one-up Joe after he gets his new home theater system. The spirit of the dead indian leader then wreaks havoc on the Griffin family.

The Griffin Family History: After burglars break into the Griffin house, the family hides in a panic room. Now faced with imminent death, Peter retells the history of the family in their last hours of life.

And that’s all of the episodes that come along with this volume. However, with my edition, I received a special bonus disc with a sneak peek at Seth Macfarlane’s new show “The Winner”. It also contains an episode of American Dad: Roger ‘N’ Me.

I really enjoyed this volume of Family Guy and look forward to more seasons from this great show.

This television series is based on the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957), who wrote the story of her family’s life on the prairie. I read these books growing up and then loved the TV series as well. Michael Landon, that I had seen on “Bonanza”, was the icing on the cake: one of my favorite actors helping to tell one of my favorite stories.

Here’s an episode guide, with a tiny description:

1. Castoffs: Pa gives Laura a new dog after her dog Jack dies. She doesn’t want a new dog.

2. Times Of Change: Charles and Mary are very disappointed in what life in Chicago is really like.

3. My Ellen: Friend Ellen drowns and Ellen’s mother thinks that Laura is her daughter.

4. The Handyman: When Charles is away, Mary suspects that Caroline and a hired man are falling in love.

5. The Wolves: After Laura and Andy set up a pen for wolf cubs in the barn, wild dogs try to get into the barn.

6.. The Creeper of Walnut Grove: Laura and Andy try to figure who is stealing things in Walnut Grove with hilarious results.

7. To Run And Hide: Dr. Baker finds a new doctor for the town after he loses a patient, only to find that the new doctor may not be so dedicated.

8. The Aftermath: Jesse and Frank James take hostages.

9. The High Cost Of Being Right: After their barn burns down, Mr. Garvey’s wife gets a job in spite his objections.

10. The Fighter: Charles boxes a man who turns out to be very ill.

11. Meet Me At The Fair: At the fair, Carrie climbs into the basket of a hot air balloon.

12. Here Come The Brides: A newcomer falls in love with Miss Beadle, and Nellie Oleson falls in love with the newcomer’s son.

13. Freedom Flight: The citizens of Walnut Grove are hostile toward an Indian boy and his sick father.

14. The Rivals: Charles tries to save his business from a competitor. Laura competes with another girl for a boy that she loves.

15. Whisper Country: As a new teacher in a backwoods community, Mary gets opposition from a resident who tries to convince everyone that a school isn’t needed.

16. I Remember, I Remember: On Charles and Caroline’s wedding anniversary, Charles is unable to make it home on time.

17. Be My Friend: Laura and her Pa find a baby.

18. The Inheritance: Charles spends an inheritance and then discovers the money is worthless.

19. The Stranger: Mr Oleson sends his nephew to Charles to learn some morals.

20. A Most Precious Gift: Caroline has a new baby.

21. I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away (1): Mary goes blind.

22. I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away (2): Mary goes to a blind school in Iowa.

I hope that Goldhil Home Media corrects what were problems in early season DVD’s with some audio and visual quality problems, cut scenes, and episodes out of order. The improvements we saw in the third season included chapters within episodes, and credits with each episode. Although LHOTP was geared toward children, many adults watch it. I hope that whoever is putting season 4 together has realized that and makes the other needed improvements! This is a five star show and deserves five star DVD treatment!

For those who’d like to know, here is the in-order list of episodes from Season Four, which first aired from September 1977 to March 1978. Memorable moments include the death of Laura’s beloved dog Jack (and the introduction of his replacement Bandit), a near divorce of the Garveys (that concludes in the judge pronouncing both of them “crazy,”), Carrie’s adventures in a hot-air balloon, the birth of Grace Ingalls, Mary’s dealing with blindness, and the introduction of Adam Kendall. Thanks to all involved in the DVD release of this beloved TV series! I can’t wait to buy this one!

If you thought the original cut of Highlander II was bad, just wait until you see Highlander: The Source, the fifth (and hopefully final) installment in the beloved series. The Source begins sometime in the distant future (*yawn*) as Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul), Methos (Peter Wingfield), Duncan’s ex-wife Anna (Thekla Reuten), Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes), and a small band of immortals seek out “the source”, which is said to be the origin place of the immortals. Standing in their way is the demonic Guardian (Cristian Solimeno), who is supposedly an all-powerful immortal that picks off our heroes one by one, leading to the inevitable showdown between him and Duncan. What ends up being the most infuriating about The Source for Highlander fans is how much the film ends up going against the mythology of the series, as well as Duncan and other character’s motivations for seeking out “the source”. The Jabba the Hutt lookalike in the film doesn’t exactly help things out either, and the film as a whole is just one big jumbled mess, thanks to the lackluster, sloppily edited direction from Brett Leonard (Lawnmower Man, Man-Thing), and a cover-themed edition of the original Highlander soundtrack to boot (the version of “Who Wants to Live Forever?” is more annoying than anything else) just all amount to the worst sequel the series has ever seen. Adrian Paul seems to sleep through the film, and the ending is, well, see it for yourself if you’re a Highlander fan, and decide which part of the film is the worst. All in all, Highlander: The Source is beyond bad, and no matter how much of a Highlander fan you may be, this should be avoided. If you are a fan though, you’ll more than likely want to check this out anyway, but don’t say I you hadn’t been warned.

There have been two really great parts to the whole Highlander franchise: the original movie, and the TV series (especially from its second season on, when they introduced the concept of the Watcher organization, and wrote stories about a subgroup of Watcher who developed a religious fanatic-type fear and hatred of immortals, and started hunting them). Both these version of the Highlander franchise featured great characters, marvellous flashbacks, interesting villains, and dealt with both the positive and negative aspects of immortality, such as unending youth and strength, and the experience of being able to see whole different ages, such as most people can only dream about, balanced off against the loneliness of watching everyone around you age and die, with only a handful of people with whom you can form lasting bonds — and many of them are out to take your head. It was thrilling stuff, and as the first movie and series proved, this concept was a rich source from which really great stories could be mined again and again.

How sad then that with the exception of that first film, the makers of Highlander movies have failed so dismally. This movie actually rivals “Highlander II: the Quickening” in sheer awfulness, and I hadn’t believed that possible. I had a terrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I found that this movie was set in a near future where society had broken down into chaos and anarchy. Why on earth did the producers of this film choose to borrow an element from the worst movie in the entire franchise? The villain was so ridiculous he wasn’t even remotely menacing or scary. What could EVER make anyone think a villain who yells “Helloo Joe!” as he sails through the air hit by a car (in a stupendously unrealistic stunt/special effect) would play well? This was just one moment among many involving the villain that elicits unintentional laughter. The guardian was so horrendously, cringe-inducingly bad that if the Kurgan were in this film he would have killed him for bringing villains into disrepute.

And of course, on top of a poor story, a laughable villain, and the complete absence of any of the elements that made either the first film or the series a success, this movie suffers from a fault common to all Highlander films but the first: lack of continuity. Why, if they are going to make these things, do they insist on disregarding everything that came before? This is really frustrating to those fans who have delved into the world of the Highlander franchise and would like it to make at least some sense, and have some internal consistency. It’s hard to stay interesting in something when they keep changing the ground rules on you.

But the above listed flaws barely scratch the surface of what it wrong with this movie. I read that this was intended to be the first of a trilogy. All I can say to that is that I hope not. As much as I am irritated at the lack of consistency and continuity in the Highlander movies, if they’re going to do any more, they need to retcon this abortion out of existence. Having inexplicably copied concepts from the single worse installment of the whole franchise, they should also copy the follow up taken to that movie by the producers of the next one and write a new story that ignores this steaming pile of dog excrement and starts with a blank slate.

The second collection of Gundam Seed picks up where the first left off. It takes the series and characters to a new level. I couldn’t stop watching these two collections and I watched Gundam Seed Destiny Anime Legends, Vol. 1 in less than 4 days because of how intriguing the characters and universe are. If you are a fan of Gundam, I encourage you to see how this wonderful series has grown in the new millenium.

I do NOT give away 4 star ratings lightly (unlike some of my fellow Anime “lovers”).

This 2nd installment in Gundam Seed was better than the first (call me dense, but “Complete Collection, part II” is an oxymoron… but with this much content, I’ll forgive the misnomer) in every way.

NON Spoiler (again, unlike my fellow reviewers) review:

“What is it you believe in? What are you fighting for? Is it that medal? Or your fathers orders?”

For this 2nd part of the story, the drama intensifies, the true horrors of war are even more revealed and the characters (some of whom, may have appeared to be comic relief or eye candy…such as the person who uttered the above quote) become more complex, more grown up, more of a player than we were led to believe.

The “Giant Uber Weapon Dispensing Machine” is in full production as both sides reveal their secret weapon(s) (mobile suit and otherwise) in a bunch of “AHA!” moments. It gets a little much, but does add to the suspense.

This is a “cartoon” but is not for children. People are shot, bloody, chopped in half, blow up in the horrors of space (vacuum) combat and die in briefly violent ways. I’d rate it PG13.

The music is over all passable, but with flashes of particular greatness. The Music video alone on this set is worth watching again and again, “Believe” by Nami Tamaki. I’m listening right now and getting goosebumps. And this other particular song was beautifully haunting (and imho, under used) [EDIT - link to Youtube video deleted by Amazon. The character development, the plot twists, the music, the story, the hard edge, all were brought together in a very satisfying way. Its not perfect, but its close. Ironically, my biggest turn off is the cartoonish Gundams. Giant humanoid fighting machines have only the barest of military justifications, painting them in clown colors just makes it worse. Robotech (Macross in particular) had much more realistic looking Mechs (Gundams, whatever) and that was 25 years ago. This grown up story with its tight production is worthy of a more grown up design of weaponry.

It is a strange mix. On the one hand, you see the horrors of war, the loss of your friends, coming face to face with those who loved the people you killed, the treatment of Prisoners of War, civilian casualties. Then another well choreographed battle that draws you into the action, but shouldn’t I feel guilty now for enjoying it?

Guilty or not, I completely enjoyed Gundam Seed.

Before Matt Groening and pals introduced us to “The Simpsons,” Joseph Barbera and William Hannah produced a little show called “The Flintstones.” Season “1″ was first aired on ABC during 1960 and has been syndicated in perpetuity throughout the known universe ever since.

Episode Guide:
(Screen Test) The Flagstones: Admittedly, I’ve never seen the screen test (discovered in 1993) and cannot even vouch for it’s inclusion in the DVD set-one can only hope.
(1) The Flintstone Flyer: Barney invents a flying machine (the Barney Copter) which he later loses to his over-bearing best friend. The duo uses the machine to ditch their wives and go bowling, thus setting the stage for years of adventures.
(2) Hot Lips Hannigan: Fred relives his glory days as a singer in his high school band as he jams with an old pal.
(3) The Swimming Pool: Fred and Barney construct a pool spanning across their backyards…a hilarious power struggle ensues.
(4) No Help Wanted: Having cost his friend his job, Fred finds Barney a new job as a repo man. Enter Dino.
(5) The Split Personality: Following a blow to the noggin’ Fred becomes his more refined alter, Frederick.
(6) The Monster from the Tar Pits: Gary Granite is filming in Bedrock and lucky Fred finds a part in the film…, as his stunt double.
(7) The Babysitters: Fred and Barney shirk their responsibilities and bring a baby to a friends house to watch the big fight. BYOB?
(8) At the Races: Fred and Barney rely on gambling for a quick-fix solution. Do you think they win?
(9) The Engagement Ring: Barney purchases a ring for Betty but Wilma discovers the ring and assumes it was for her… Instead of spending five minutes explaining the situation, Barney decides to enter a boxing contest with The Champ.
(10) Hollyrock, Here I Come: The girls come up with a winning slogan and a trip to Hollyrock. Lost without their better halves, Fred and Barney aren’t far behind.
(11) The Golf Champion: Fred demonstrates his prowess at golf, earning a trophy. Barney, however, pesters his buddy as Fred neglected to pay his membership dues.
(12) The Sweepstakes Ticket: Both the guys and gals purchase lottery tickets unbeknown to their spouses. As they forever remain strapped for cash, I think you know how this one ends.
(13) The Drive-In: Fred and Barney secretly quit their jobs to fulfill a short-lived dream of business ownership. The gig is up when one of their attractive employees pays a visit to the Flintstone residence.
(14) The Prowler: Terrorized by a neighborhood prowler, Betty and Wilma decide to take Judo lessons, despite Fred’s objections.

At this writing, I couldn’t tell you about the extra’s included in this volume. However, as I recall, The Flintstones’ 3rd season (1962-63) is perhaps their most transitional, as Fred (Alan Reed) and Wilma (Jean Vanderpyl) give birth to a little cavegirl named Pebbles (also voiced by Vanderpyl, she would make her debut towards the end of season 3 in Dress Rehearsal (aka The Blessed Event), at the end of the show; her 1st words are “Abba dabba goo goo!”). Many of the cartoons featured Wilma expecting, with the announcement of Wilma’s pregnancy at the end of one particular episode appropriately entitled The Surprise (ironically, this episode had more to deal with Barney’s nephew Marblehead, whom Fred grows to love, though he won’t admit it! Listen for Marblehead’s imitation of Uncle Barney’s hiccupy laugh). Barney (Mel Blanc) and Betty (Bea Benederet) are the godparents. Also, the familiar theme “Meet the Flintstones” also makes it proper debut in this season (it was featured in background music in Seasons 1 and 2).

Highlights include a performance by Rock Roll, who looks and sings a little like Elvis (”There’s a town I know where the hipsters go called Bedrock, twitch, twitch!”), Wilma and Betty enter a Rock Toasties contest and win a trip to Hawaii (Wilma saves Fred’s life by punching out a ferocious dinosaur chasing him, “Beat it, buster!”), Barney plans a surprise birthday party for Fred and spends most of the episode trying to get a fast asleep Fred home to the party, Fred takes ballet lessons to improve his bowling, Barney saves a baby but Fred unintentionally takes the credit, Fred goes back to high school for his diploma in order to avoid termination from Mr. Slate and becomes a football hero (”Flintstone! Flintstone! Rah, rah, rah!”), Wilma rents the house to 3 Swedish musicians (”Duh, he is Olie, I am Schven!”), Barney becomes invisible thanks to one of Fred’s wacky inventions, Fred tries hard to get along with his disagreeable mother-in-law during a visit (”I love my mudderinlaw!” he reminds himself, but gets his revenge by taking her on a long taxiride in disguise), Fred hires an Italian maid named Lolabrickida (who is an excellent cook and a lot nicer than Grandma Dynamite and the bossy nurse hired after Pebbles’ birth, but has zero tolerance for bad singing!), Fred and Barney go skiing in the mountains and unwittingly prevent a jewelheist (”Psst! Slalom, Shorty, SLALOM!”), Barney reluctantly agrees to masquerade at Little Tex to impress Fred’s rich Uncle Tex (voiced by Hal Smith, “Wahoooooo!”), Arnold the Paperboy cons Fred into paying more and later Wilma insists Fred see a quacky doctor and for Wilma’s birthday, Fred buys her a dodo bird named Doosey, who snitches to Wilma and Betty about the boys’ plans to go to a Water Buffalo convention in Frantic City without them (”Squawk! Frantic City, Frantic City, squawk, whistle!”). Also, Barney tricks Fred into thinking Pebbles can talk (”Do thum backfwips for me, Daddy, or I’ll cwyyyy!”) and the Flintstones move out of their humble abode to be near a crowd of rich snobs (”Everybody into the pyool!”).

If you liked Seasons 1 and 2, save your money for this one! That’ll be 2 rocks, please!
