Two star basketball players, Donnell, a black kid from the inner city, and Jason, a white kid from the afflunt suburbs, are sentenced to 30 days’ labor in each other’s communities following a brawl between their two teams. The success of Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way ensures that the straight-to-DVD release of Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power will attract an eager audience among fans of urban gangland melodramas. A stellar cast provides adequate compensation as this tame, relatively bloodless prequl trots out every cliche in the book, qualifying as the 21st-century equivalent of a Warner Bros. gangster programmer from the 1930s. The well-chosen cast of new and familiar faces is caught up in a standard plot of territorial tension in Harlem between the blacks led by Hollywood Nicky (Sean Combs, adding a touch of blingy humor), the old-school Mafia led by Artie Sr. (Burt Young), and the caught-in-the-middle Purto Ricans who are gaining control as Carlito (Jay Hernandez, in the role Al Pacino originated) and his cross-cultural gang rises to power after his recent release from prison with cellmates and partners-in-crime Earl (Mario Van Peebles) and Rocco (Michael Kelly). They’re a tight trio in a climate of mistrust and deception, and Earl’s hot-headed brother (Mtume Grant) sets off a series of events that force Carlito to invent a clever alliance that raises the body count while ensuring his long-term status as a dude-you-don’t-mess-with. It’s fun, for what it’s worth (and fans of De Palma’s film will enjoy connecting events from one film to the other), but there’s not a shred of originality in script or direction by Michael Scott Bregman, whose father Martin produced Carlito’s Way. Still, there’s something to be said for a gang picture that never promises more than it can deliver. On those terms, and with enough violence and strip-joint nudity to satisfy its generic prerequisites, Rise to Power is definitely worth a look. –Jeff Shannon

When Odette (Gaby Hoffman) gets kicked out of her coed school for plotting to lose her virginity (All I Wanna Do is set in 1963), her parents send her to Miss Godard’s Preparatory School, an all-girls school that tries to instill independence in its students. Her roommates turn out to be the school’s troublemakers–Verena (Kirsten Dunst), Tinka (Monica Keena), and their friends Tweety (Heather Matarazzo) and Momo (Merritt Weaver). Though Odette initially resists (not because she wants to stick to the rules, but because she hates the whole school so much she won’t even join the rebels), she gradually becomes part of the rambunctious circle. Du to financial trouble, the school’s trustees decide to merge with a nearby boys’ academy, despite the furious protests of Miss Godard’s headmistress (Lynn Redgrave). Verena echoes the headmistress’s sentiments and launches an offensive of pranks to discredit the visiting boys, even though the struggle splits apart her own social group. Though All I Wanna Do is being marketed as a goofy romp, it walks a line between a coming-of-age comedy and a young feminist manifesto (as one might imagine from the movie’s previous title, Strike!). It’s a tricky combination, but writer-director Sarah Kernochan succeeds–she also wrote Impromptu, which similarly mixed tart yet sympathetic humor with subtle political commentary. The direction is tight and the script allows its heroines a surprising complexity. The cast of rising young stars, also featuring Rachael Leigh Cook, is superb throughout. The intrepid Standard Deviants, a troupe of young performers unafraid to shamelessly ham it up in the cause of making difficult academic subjects memorable, turn their attention to “The Pumped Up World of Pre-Algebra” in this DVD. Using lots of examples and flashy computer graphics to illustrate them, the cast jumps into the basics by answering the qustion “What is an integer exponent?” The rules of exponents are explained, and these initial segments are followed with a review. The basic format is followed throughout, with the concepts of prime factorization, roots, fractional exponents, and inequalities being covered with a variety of techniqus, including some skits and jokes bad enough to serve as brilliant mnemonic devices. This subject matter doesn’t sound like anything fun, but the cast does its best to explain things thoroughly, and the high production valus make the content visually appealing on the screen. The DVD format lends itself to a feature that presents what are essentially on-screen flashcards showing formulas, and a “Pumped Up Exam” can also be administered, with the viewer answering by using the buttons on the DVD player’s remote control. An academic panel oversaw the production to ensure that the math is solid, and this is as entertaining a treatment of pre-algebra as could ever be expected. –Robert J. McNamara
